Ami rewrote a few of the questions of the meme so that they involved different groups of characters. So, I thought I'd run my characters though that version, too.
Same ten characters: 1. Han Solo (Star Wars) 2. Miles Vorkosigan (Bujold’s Vorkosigan series) 3. MacGyver (MacGyver) 4. Cho Hakkai (Saiyuki) 5. The Doctor (Doctor Who) 6. Kim Possible (Kim Possible) 7. Eli Quinn (Vorkosigan series) 8. Sydney Fox (Relic Hunter) 9. Kerowyn (Lackey’s By the Sword) 10. Samwise Gamgee (Lord of the Rings)
2. Gender-swap 2, 8 & 10. Which character would have the most change in their story arc? Which the least? Would any of these characters have to have a complete personality change to be believable as the opposite sex?
Miles, Sydney, and Samwise. I covered Sydney and Sam before, but Miles… He would make a perfectly plausible woman (then again, I have trouble thinking of characters who couldn’t be gender swapped), but there would be major changes to his…her story because of Barrayar’s society. True, her parents would be just as encouraging, but she wouldn’t have a chance of being part of the Barrayaran military, nor would she have the same status or later job oportunities…then again…this is Miles we’re talking about, perhaps even as a woman she’d end up an Emperial Auditor. As for the off-planet adventures, those aren’t a problem at all - even if you didn’t gender swap love interests. I think sci-fi fans could cope with a lesbian space adventure hero.
3. Compare the matchups of 1 & 8 and 5 & 9. (Ignore canon sexual preferences for the moment.) Which couple would be more compatible? Which couple would be more plausible to people from either principal's home culture?
Han Solo and Sydney Fox: Han would drive Sydney nuts, but Han drives most women nuts, Leia included. They would have a bit of a firey relationship, since she can very definitley take care of herself…and keeping him out of trouble could easily be a full time job, not to mention keeping him on the straight and narrow. She would object to his lifestyle, being a reasonably law abiding sort, so that could be a problem, and I think he would be bored on Earth, another problem.
The Doctor and Kerowyn: They would get along, I think, since both are active heroes. I don’t know if she’s quite his type, though. He seems to prefer slightly softer women, if one can extrapolate from the Lady in the Fireplace episode. Though, that she was still a strong minded woman, so this might work. I’m not sure if she’d be willing to leave her planet, though, and I can’t see him setling down or becoming a mercenary…so that could be a problem. They might be better off as friends.
4. Your team is 3, 4 & 9. The mission consists of a social challenge, a mental challenge and a physical challenge. Which team member do you assign to each challenge?
MacGyver, Cho Hakkai, Kerowyn. And again, they could probably just do rock-paper-scissors for the challenges. MacGyver is still probably the best choice for a mental challenge, and Kerowyn is probably the best for a physical challenge, once again leaving Hakkai with the social challenge. Or they could just do rock-paper-scissors.
5. 7 becomes 1's boss for a week in some plausible fashion. How's their working relationship?
Eli Quinn becomes Han Solo’s boss: Well, at least this is more plausible - if Han were stuck in the Vorkosigan universe, I could see him hooking up with the Dendarii Mercenaries. It wouldn’t be a perfectly smooth working relationship, given that Han has serious recklessness issues and seems to prefer being in charge of things. I think as long as she used him as a mission leader - after double checking that he actually has a plan for said missions - it would work out okay.
6. 2 finds him/her/itself inserted into 6's continuity. As far as anyone other than 2 or 6 is concerned, they've always been there. What role would 2 be presumed to have had in 6's story, and could they fit in without going wonky?
Miles Vorkosigan in Kim Possible’s continuity: … Ow, ow, ow, that makes my brain hurt. I simply cannot imagine Miles confined to a single planet, even one with so many stray villains, never mind Miles in high school, but I’ll try. I suppose he’d prove himself to her - lets face it, she’d have doubts about his ability to be a fellow hero, given his physical issues - and join up. Ron would not be pleased once he realized Miles, despite his phisical issues, is both wildly competent and irresistable to women, and Kim’s enemies would have a tendancy to underestimate him, but who doesn’t. It’d be easier to see her transported to his universe than vise versa, but I guess it’s not quite as ow as I originally thought.
7. 3 and 5 get three wishes. The catch is that they have to agree on all three wishes before they get the benefits of any of them. What three wishes would they make?
MacGyver and the Doctor: The Doctor would probably want a do over of the war that killed his people, and MacGyver would agree to that for him. MacGyver would probably want funding for the Phoenix Foundation or some number of humanitarian or environmentalist organizations, which the Doctor might see as aiming too limitedly, but could probably be talked into. And…I don’t know…universal peace? Except that wishes never work the way they’re supposed to, something both would know, so they’d pick something that would give them the ability to do the most good. (I suddenly have horrible images of multiple Doctors and MacGyvers… O.o)
8. 1 and 2 are brainwashed by a one-time artifact that works even on people immune to mind control to attack and kill 4. They keep their normal personality, skills and competence level, except any Code vs. Killing has been turned off. Can 4 survive? How?
Han Solo and Miles Vorkosigan brainwashed to kill Cho Hakkai: Uh…wow. Unless Miles could figure out a way to take out youkai, he and Han don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of killing Hakkai. But it would become some kind of bizzare on going problem (something Hakkai is quite used to) because I can’t quite see Hakkai killing them. They are human, after all.
9. 6, 7, 9 & 10 must help an orphanage full of small and depressed children have a merry Christmas. Who does what, knowing that at the very least the kids will be expecting a visit from Santa?
Kim Possible, Eli Quinn, Kerowyn, Samwise: Would go pretty much as the other set - Eli and Kerowyn buy presents, everyone decorates and tells stories, and a good time is had by all.
10. 3 and 8 are challenged to circumnavigate the Earth in eighty days or less, using only forms of transportation invented before 1900. Can they do it, or will they be fatally distracted by sidequests or their own personality conflicts?
MacGyver and Sydney Fox: Sure, they’d leave a trail of discovered artifacts and assisted people in their wake, but they could do it. They’d probably have a pretty good time, too. This would be about as entertaining as MacGyver and Sam. And an entirely plausible cross-over show. ^_^
