Fears and Interests

There was a heck of a thunderstorm here on Sunday.  Now, I have kind of a love-hate relationship with thunderstorms - I grew up in Iowa, where thunderstorms are not only common, but sometimes mean tornadoes.  Granted, Iowa tornadoes aren't the monster F4 and F5s that, say, Oklahoma gets, but they can still do a lot of damage, and, frankly, if it

Hmm, one fear that is also an interest for me is medical stuff. I'm scared of being sick and I'm also fascinated by diseases of all kinds and love to learn medical things.

However, I'm terrified of insects and I don't like to think about them, learn about them, see them, etc. That comes close to being a phobia rather than a fear, so that fits your theory, I think.

::tilts head:: My biggest fear, really, is embarrassment in social situations, but I'm not sure where to fit that. I despise almost all comedy, because it usually features people being embarrassed. But I do like to read about mental health issues.

Interesting. I feel similar about comedy, liking pretty much only adventure-comedy which tends to rely on banter and trope-subversion for humor, not embarrassment, but instead of being afraid of being embarrassed, I have a bit of a fear of embarrassing other people. When I was a kid, people were always mistaking me for a boy and would be horribly embarrassed whenever anyone corrected them - which felt far more awful to me than their original mistake. So I still dread embarrassing people and don't find embarrassment funny.

Well, the news is really good (bad?) for that. It's easy to forget that if whatever they're covering were really that common, it wouldn't _be_ news. Not to mention we humans are great at being afraid of things. If I didn't work at being sensible, I'd probably be sitting in my closet hiding from all the scary stuff out there.
