Happy Birthday to me! Wait...I'm _how_ old?

Jun 16, 2012 10:43

I'm still fairly certain someone snuck an extra decade into my age when I wasn't looking.  I mean, if I'm really 38, shouldn't I be an adult and stuff?  I don't know whether it's just because I'm not hitting any of the societal markers of adulthood - spouse, kids, career, house with a white picket fence - or whether I just don't really feel like an adult, but, well, I don't feel like I could possibly be 38, regardless of what the math says.  Maybe the Rick Simon sort of 38 (how old were Simon and Simon supposed to be, anyway?), wherein one lives in a boat in one's brother's backyard, still likes comic books, and sometimes fails to take life seriously because it's imitating good fiction.

I could believe 28.  Which is how old I was when I moved here.  (Yep, been here a whole decade now.  Been in the nifty apartment building for eight years, too.  Still need an apartment with a more functional kitchen, though...)  That's a little less adult.  Maybe.  I don't know, it all sounds too terribly old for someone who's apartment looks like a particularly book-mad college student's dorm room.  And who spends their free time - in no particular order - playing D&D, walking, playing SW:TOR, writing fan fic, reading, playing with their cat, rambling about stuff on the internet, and occasionally seeing movies.

Eh, well, if you're only as old as you feel, I suspect I'll be in my early twenties for the rest of my life.  Hope no one notices I'm only pretending to be an adult!

I shall celebrate my improbable birthday by going out for sushi with my parents, who are coming down for my birthday/fathers day, and perhaps a walk in the park with them, depending on how hot it gets today.
