[Pet peeves Series] On Shounen-ai/Yaoi
The revival of the pet peeves series from my last journal! Because I'm easily bothered by anything and everything!
Girly bottoms
One thing that bothers me greatly about shounen-ai/yaoi comics, manga, art, fanfics is that the supposed bottom of the relationship looks extremely feminine, so feminine that the only thing that would prove to me that the character is not a female is a disclaimer that it is indeed a shounen-ai/yaoi work (or the presence of a penis).
But honestly, if people enjoy that, why not just read shoujo or hentai? I understand the appeal of an effeminate uke, as it is yaoi/shounen-ai, but still manages to retain the traditional image of a "couple".
In my case, however, I seek shounen-ai/yaoi for the meaning of its name(s), "boy loves boy". I realize that, yes, there are males who are extremely feminine and can pass off as females in real life, but my preference still lies in shounen-ai/yaoi that portrays boys the way most of them are, not whiny, PMS-having, frail things. Just because they take it up the butt doesn't mean they should have less testosterones.
I guess it's my bias for strong, determined characters speaking, because I also dislike the weak, whiny portrayal of female characters.
