So I went to go watch V for Vendetta on release night, at the 10:20 showing, and in contrast to my roommate, did so without the accompaniment of Johnny Walker. What ensued for the following two hours was utterly mind-blowing. In all honesty, I believe this movie could well be the best movie most of us have ever seen. It's so amazingly complete in all it tries to accomplish. The storytelling, pace, subject matter, political connotations, romanticism, and cinematography are all top-notch, which had the words "oh, my god" repeatedly drawn from betwixt my speech flaps upon cessation.
Being that I'm no reviewer, I'll leave the professionals to do their jobs and not try to give my own spin. However, I am very deeply impressed with the thoroughness at which the movie pleased me. The main character of the movie, known throughout as simply V, would be every guy's role model, had he only been real. A cunning linguist (touche), accomplished fencer, brilliant incendiaries expert, botanist, musician, hopeless romantic, superb actor, cook, martial artist, and above all justice extremist, V never ceases to amaze. The main protagonist, played by the ever-lovely Natalie Portman, was surprisingly the weakest point of the movie. The only parts of the film with which I was displeased were both involving her acting too little like a person, and too much like that of a comic book character. This, I suppose, is forgivable, due to the origin of the movie.
Another cause for much excitement and reverence stems from the realization that the movie holds much political messagery, which is quite amazing for all the nonsense following the 9/11 happenings. The parallels between the Bush administration of the real world and the iron-fist rule of future England in the film are rather startling, and quite easy to see, even to those of us who utterly despise politics and generally try to abstain from any dealings with them.
I've honestly forgotten about what I was trying to accomplish with this post, and fell into a reminiscence of the movie, recalling how the movie hit hard as a visual good-guy-bad-guy action movie, a make-you-think investigation movie, and also a fight-the-power political propaganda film. I utterly -LOVE- having a film far surpass my expectations, particularly when the expectations merely being met would make my day.
You should go see it for yourself.
Remember, remember, the fifth of November
The gunpowder, treason, and plot
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot
