It was a good attempt. Perhaps you should use the pokedex to check the other pokemon's level before engaging another one in battle?

It is easy to miss if you don't know what you're looking for. [Tom says graciously, no hint of scorn worming its way into his voice] It's a rather useful function, I believe you'll find.

It helps if you examine the pokedex closely. Giving the book in your pack a much closer reading would also help your grasp on battling.
