Aoife and I saw Step Brothers on Friday night. That was one funny movie. Ah, I love the cinema experience, especially when everyone is in fits of laughter together and choking violently on their popcorn. Oh wait, that one was just me.
On Saturday my father, Sean and I went up to Donegal for my cousin Kelly's 21st birthday party. When we got to my aunt Betty's house, it was very hectic and noisy. The sitting room was full of Kelly's college friends, and while one Tall Hot Guy came over to me and started asking me about my Star Wars t-shirt, I wasn't in the mood for making new friends so I hung out in the kitchen. That was chaotic too, because my cousin Patrick and his friend Werner were cooking dinner for about twenty people.
Well, Werner isn't Patrick's friend. As such. More like his boyfriend. I've always adored Patrick and when I found out he was gay two years ago it was a bit weird - I don't know any gay people. As this was the first time I'd seen him since he came out, I wondered if I would look at him differently, but I didn't. Although when we first walked through the door he and Werner were there fussing over the mince and stir-fried vegetables. It was funny.
Werner is nice. He's from South Africa and Afrikaans is his first language. He doesn't seem to understand sarcasm. He's a trained pastry chef and it took him two days to make Kelly's birthday cake, which no one else was allowed to touch. It was kept in the computer room, and everyone kept slipping away to sneak a look at it and wanting to smush it in a 'You-See-This-Big-Red-Button?-In-No-Circumstances-Do-You-Push-It' kind of way.
Then Auntie Marie and my cousins Aine and Aisling from Belfast turned up and Daddy gave out to Aine for taking up smoking and everyone drank beer (not me) and had dinner and then went off to the party, which was being held in a pub in town. I didn't feel like going, so Sean and I stayed in Betty's and watched Spider-Man 3. When that was finished we went across the dark garden to the next door neighbours' house, Jimmy and Phidelma, who were also at the party and were kindly giving us a bed for the night.
I had my own room and everything and slept OK, apart from when I was woken up by Daddy, Jimmy and Phidelma come in at half four in the morning, talking very loudly. (It was apparently a good party; then when they got back and had tea at Betty's, my father and Werner got into a heated argument over the difference between cupcakes and buns.)
In the morning Auntie Betty and Uncle Pat turned up, no doubt wishing to escape the craziness of their house, and Phidelma made everyone an Ulster fry for breakfast. Well, it was more like lunch at that point. We went into Betty's house briefly - where everyone looked very pale and Coke had replaced beer - before Daddy, Sean and I went to Fintra Beach for a walk. There we climbed rocks, picked up dead crabs and wrote 'HELP ME PLEASE for the love of God help me' into the sand with a stick.
When we returned, Kelly was cooking up a fry for her friends that were still there, and the adults seemed to have recovered slightly. We had some tea and cake (it was GOOD cake) before heading home. Back to boggy Leitrim, leaving behind the mountains, rocky hills and purple heather of Donegal.
...sigh.
My father's Apple computer has arrived. I am very envious, but at least I get his laptop now. Not that I have it yet; I'm still stuck on this ancient computer.
Oh, and I finished Breaking Dawn, FINALLY. Thank God. The first two hundred pages were riveting, but then I lost interest.
