As in, Kenyon. Because today was the deadline for honors scholarship consideration. The thing that I'm most proud of is my essay: it was only 19 words over the limit. I should probably apply to Towson soon, since I have to do an interview for the honors college. About that...
Also, on Thursday, December 13, 2007, I attended the winter Choral concert, Sing for Joy! in the new auditorium!
North Harford High School has not had an auditorium since may 2004. Orchestra concerts were held at the middle school, choral concerts and dramatic productions across the Mason-Dixon at Kennard Dale, and band concerts wherever they would have us. Now, we're all coming home.
It was great. Just awesome. f I had to pick one group to open the auditorium, it would have been chorus. We were all supposed to do a hard hat concert back in early november, but it wasn't finished in time.
A cappella opened with the "Star Spangled Banner," and then "Awakening," and we heard from women's choir, men's choir, madrigals, Bel Canto, guitar ensemble, Lilacs, and Majestics. Bel Canto's performance was dedicated to former member Amy Dykes, who is recovering from a brain tumor. The only thing she hasn't forgotten how to do is sing. While each group came on stage, all the seated groups would stand, turn around, and lead a carol sing-along. I had to look at the words, but that's okay. It was fun. The madrigals were soooo good. For "Christmas time is here," Tom did some mad piano, and Pat came out and did some mad snare-brushing. Majestics was great too; I had high hopes, and they were met. The group only did one song, a scat version of Ukrainian Bell Carol, arr. Josh Brown. They didn't practice together until the day before the concert. It was brilliant. Near the end, the madrigals led, "The Size of Your Heart." I liked that they mixed things in, too. Like, Brooke played violin for one of the Bel Canto songs and Chrissy Carr sang a solo to finish one of the guitar songs.
There was a reception afterwards.I was basically telling all the choral kids how awesome they are. And I saw Emma! I forgot that, even though she went to SMA, her siblings are still going to come to North Harford, unless they opt for tech or SMA themselves. Her brother Max had a solo in Men's choir. We're plotting a Gamma party...
We rehearsed in the auditorium on Friday. The bad thing is, every single mistake can be heard. Every missed accidental or key signature mistake, every truncated phrase, every incorrect articulation...and everyone's going to have to learn how to count. The good thing is, it's going to make us better.
We have the best chorus in the state. In a few years, all of our music programs will be like that. I hear orchestra sounds great this year. Their concert is Monday. (Squee! I'm in the mood for good music now.) Dani and Jenny were practicing string quartet stuff with Mr. Heinly after school on Friday, on the walkway that's suspended over the "office plaza." (yes, my school now looks like a mall) I felt like I was in a movie, walking out to my car with a soundtrack.
