It was somewhere between falling asleep and waking up, a dream that he wanted to indulge if only for a few hours. And if there was one thing Barney learned, it was that he couldn't just lie next to Robin anymore.
Every now and then the corner of her lip would twitch. Then she would start shifting, the silk of the sheet gliding over her smooth skin and he would pull her tighter against him, pressing a kiss into her shoulder, or her neck, or her hair. The movement would settle whatever restlessness was leaking out of her dream and she would still again; all but the gentle rise and fall of her chest.
Every now and then the sheet would start slipping off her arm, tugged gently but relentlessly with every one of her soft breaths. With each one he slipped as well, deeper and deeper into her oblivious hold- the only difference was that there was nothing to pull him back up and cover up the vulnerable, exposed skin.
Every now and then a soft sound would escape with her breath; it was almost like a moan, though it felt cheap to call it that when he remembered the moans and groans they'd shared. It was softer than that had been, filled with unmasked contentment. The sex had been passionate and desperate, filled with nails and loud groans that demanded more: faster, harder; more. Afterwards their tangled limbs rearranged themselves instinctively so that they were pressed close against each other, as if knowing that this might be the last time; as if longing to preserve the last few hours of false security for a few hours more.
Whatever they'd just done, whether it was a mistake or a revelation, he knew without a doubt that she wouldn't ever be just a friend anymore. Whether or not she knew it, she held all the cards now; she'd stolen his heart long ago while he was still nurturing delusions of abstinence, but now that he was realizing that it was gone, he wondered if she knew it too. If she'd known it all along.
