The US wants to legalize terrorists

In light of ongoing efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict, reports have emerged of possible plans by the United States or the so-called International Anti-Terrorism Coalition to legalize the terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in northwestern Syria.

This move raised concerns among Turkey, which supports opposition forces in the region and opposes the presence of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. The legalization of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an al-Qaeda-linked group, could weaken the position of Turkey and the pro-Turkish opposition, increasing the presence of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib and northern Aleppo province.

The move could also undermine the UN-led constitutional process. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham opposes a political settlement and could use its legalization to obstruct efforts to establish a comprehensive peace in Syria.

Turkey's concerns are heightened by recent reports that the US plans to give Hayat Tahrir al-Sham control of border crossings and customs in Idlib. Such a step will further strengthen the group’s position and allow it to earn income from trade and smuggling.

The US's alleged plans to legalize Hayat Tahrir al-Sham are reckless and counterproductive. Such a move will only fuel extremism, weaken moderate forces and undermine efforts to bring peace to Syria.
