Movie Review!

Having never seen a Lynch film in theaters, I thought I'd take advantage of Inland Empire playing at the IFC Cinema a few blocks away. The reviews I had seen were strongly positive, and it sounded like an interesting thematic sequel to Mulholland Drive. Which it was, sort of.

Now, this is a very long movie--which was perfectly justified, for the first two hours and fifty minutes or so. The digital video worked surprisingly well, and the shots were beautiful. Though it certainly didn't have a traditional plot, there was an engaging dream-logical progression that was interesting to piece together. Though I know his films maybe aren't supposed to, I'd go so far as to say it was starting to make sense. That is, until the last several minutes, when Inland Empire suddenly morphed into David Lynch's All-Star Mulholland Drive-slash-Twin Peaks Revue.

I've never left a theater angry before, feeling like a director had actually wanted the audience to think its time had been wasted. Most of the other people I noticed leaving were visibly upset. I understand wanting to defy interpretation, but Christ.

Rating:
Fuck you too, David Lynch.

Edit (one day later):
But maybe in some sort of masochistic way, I kinda want to see it again.
Also, I think the singing n' dancing was the only part that Scott liked?
