An earlier post reminded me that I should probably introduce myself as well. I've been a fan of smooth jazz for 15-20 years now, since WNUA in Chicago came on the air. I live in the Atlanta area (WJZZ 107.5), but travel a lot, so I'm familiar with CD 101.9 in New York, KOAI in Dallas, KTWV in LA, and I generally pick up whatever smooth jazz station there is wherever I go.
I'm a fan of the guitar players: Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Chuck Loeb, Acoustic Alchemy, Joyce Cooling, Nick Colionne, Paul Jackson Jr., George Benson, etc. and the ladies of saxophone (Candy Dulfer and Mindi Abair). I'm not as fond of the vocals, and have a little trouble with the idea of recycling R&B hits from the 60's and 70's and "lite rock" from the "70's to today" and calling it "smooth jazz" (sorry, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder don't really fit the mold). I listen to a lot of bebop and post-bop as well, particularly Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Joe Pass, Kenny Burrell, Jim Hall, The LA 4 (Laurindo Almeida, Bud Shank, Shelley Manne, Ray Brown), Emily Remler, Art Pepper, the Dave Brubeck Quartet ("Take 5" is what got me into jazz in the first place), Pat Metheny (he played with Gary Burton for a time) etc. and Brazilian bossa nova a la Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto, Stan Getz, etc. Oh, if you hadn't figured it out, I also play guitar, though not much in public.
blueringo, did you ever get your tab for "Bubbles"?
Nice to meet you all!
John
