Disgusting...Please Read (cross posted)
We all like to think that our colleges are liberal places where homophobia and hate are distant...well, at least I usually like to think so, considering I go to UCSC, one of the most liberal schools in the US. As much as Santa Cruz is probably one of the most tolerant cities around, today I whitnessed how even this city can be full of hate.
While on my phone shift for the KZSC phone drive today, one of my fellow staff members related how she had been working the phones last week when a woman called up, asking how much she (the girl answering the phone) wanted her to pledge. Sarah explained that any amount would be awesome, since it was a gift, and the woman angrily cut her off saying "Well you expect to get a CENT from me when you play such filth!?" Sarah was confused, and then she noticed the song the dj was playing was "Boys Kissing Girls Kissing Boys" (whatever the title) by Blur. She continued to rant for a minute how disgusting homosexuality is and how she wouldn't support anything that associated with it, and Sarah told her to fuck off and hung up on her. Not normally a good pledge drive tactic, but the woman was an asshole.
I thought that was pretty bad, then as I was leaving, I noticed a huge Van at the intersection on campus with even larger placards on it adorned with Rainbows and Bible tablets and sporting such slogans as "Adam Eve not Adam Steve" "Marriage is Man& Woman not Woman&Woman or Man& Man" and "Tell The CA Gov No to Gay Marriage" and even worse "Homosexuality Is Wrong and Disgusting" "No Gay Rights" etc...huge and hateful. I honked and gave him the finger, which was what most people around me were doing, but he just drove on. As I finished my things around campus, I saw him 3 more time...he was just circling the campus with his hate propaganda. It made me so mad, I decided to just do something dumb like start a Meme/small link, just for people like me who think hate is frightening.
