pedicab regulation

May 10, 2006 00:22

this is for all the NYC pirates.
i have been involved in the pedicab business in some form or another for 4 years now. recently city council proposed initiative 75 which would regulate pedicabs in NYC and make us legit after 10 years.
THAT was awesome. but now the bloomberg administration is proposing a new bill that in regulating the industry would effectively ban pedicabs from new york. we would no longer be allowed to travel inside central park, most cabs that are on the streets would go over the width limits, and most importantly in the bill there is a cap on pedicabs that would start a medallion trade that not even the richest of fleet owners would be able to afford, resulting in the yellow taxi medallion owners to also control the pedicab market.
i am encouraging anyone who can to come to the public hearing at city hall on chambers street this thursday at 1pm. this does not just affect those of us in the pedicab industry, it affects cyclists EVERYWHERE pertaining to regulation of commercial and non commercial bikes.
thank you and power to the pedal
