One Man's Trash.. and All That Jazz:

Nov 17, 2009 12:52

One of the series of works I'm constructing right now, is created from re-purposed materials. For instance, an initial piece in this series is made up of demolished (old skool... that's right, with a 'k') floppy discs. Remember those plastic things that held about ten word files and maybe a picture on them? Have you ever dissected one? Neat things to be found in there. Another piece in the series, is constructed of hundreds of cut out cardboard squares. I'm also planning to do some great things with textiles and wood in the very near future.

Within the last few years, I've really become intrigued and inspired by this huge wave of "going green." I've also fallen in love with creative design and ever-evolving interior styles. More so now that "vintage" is back. I always joke that there is a touch of the "granny" in me, so I can't tell you how excited it makes me to see things like doilies, lace, knits, antique florals, and the like, re-purposed into amazing, modern works of art.

What I'm getting at here is, the process of taking a used/old/unwanted object and turning it into a functioned design or work of art, really gets me excited. It takes the part of my brain that lusts over thinking outside of the proverbial box, and thrusts it into creative overdrive. I cannot wait to share what I'm working on with the Internet. But in the meantime, this project of creating a canopy from recycled plastic cups just made me drool all over the "GAH!" keys on my keyboard. Not only because this group of people made something so aesthetically pleasing out of what we generally consider to be trash, but the math and science they used with which to create it makes the nerd in me tickle all over.
