Plans of mine just seem to wonder away from me this year. Luck just doesn't roll in my favour in 2011. Last weekend was a prime example.
I am a big fan of the Internet series Red Vs Blue. A lot of people know this of me as go on and on about it. Rooster teeth the company that make it is brilliant and something of an inspiration when it comes to what you can do with the Internet and reaching your audience. I find most of their output Is great. It especially red vs blue.
I will lecture you on their joys some other time, or go a hunting yourself but be warned they use bad language.
The thing to take away from this is I am a big fan.
So when I heard on the rooster teeth podcast that they were planing an appearance in the UK, the first since I had heard of them, I was a little excited.
That was back in April I think, so this has been building up for me.
Eventually they announced it was at the MCM expo, which is an anime, film, media & comic convention.
I was kind of hoping that my friend Jen would join me as she gets a good laugh out of rooster teeth's stuff, but alas money & work meant that wasn't going to happen. Then my eye went the weekend prior putting the whole thing in jeopardy.
I was tender hooks with every eye unit appointment, would I be too blind to go, would I on medication that would take too much out of me, would I have to endure a hospital stay?
And if you think that last one was a bit dramatic last year I was going to go to Budapest on holiday and two days before departure I ended up in hospital staying when I should have been flying away on my first proper holiday in years. So yeah I was nervous about the rig vein pulled out in my over the whole red vs blue appearance. I was looking forward to meeting some of them in person, I want to buy merch and get it signed.
I was determined to go if it wasn't going to cost me my eye sight and a lot of people knew it.
On the day I made it up to & across London more or less okay, but it never occurred to me that my eyes would become a problem when I was there.
The convention hall was packed with cosplaying fans, merchandise stalls, events booths, and autograph stands. It was full of bustling people and upon arrival my vision started to cloud over, even in my fixed eye. I was a weeping squinting mess with limited vision and terrible navigational skills.
I brought my camera with me because I wanted to take shots of the cosplayers but i just couldn't focus enough. I stumbled on though, I was there and the whole point was to go to the stand for rooster teeth.
So imagine my dismay when I got there to find customs had held up all their stuff, merch and all, from entering the country for routine checks...
I briefly got to shake Gus from the websites hand and say a few things but it was all do anti climactic, and my eyes were having difficulty making eye contact so I wondered away.
I did my best to put a silver lining on the day, I'd spent the money on the trip up and entry after all. My vision cleared some by the end of the day and I wondered through the comic village which was great, mostly independent people where I got a comic and a cool steam punk poster before making the trip back home.
I would like to say my run I luck on that day ended there but no, why miss an opportunity to kick me when I am down?
I came home to find the front door difficult to open. Behind it I found a jumper posted through letter box. I recognised the jumper as mine. Under it was a note from Samm who had come around on the off chance for a chat & catch up for the first time in months...
It was unfortunate timing is all, especially given the day I'd just had.
I text my friend Jen saying I'd missed Samm today, she unfortunately misunderstood and told me to stop moping about her and it was time to except she was never going to just pop by....
Siiiiiiiiiiiiigh!
I had planned to go to a burlesque show the following day but I didn't trust my eyes and didn't want to go into another crowded environment with an escort of some kind. Plus I am finding going out solo in general a real struggle of late.
So that was last weekend & it's plans in all their ruined glory.
