96 of 90 : further planning...

So the short film plan goes like this.

For those late  arrivals I wrote a script for a short film for a film competition, the original  plan was to shoot it in time for a short film competition but I hit a couple of  technical hitches, mostly the location I wanted to shoot at wasn't available, so  it has been delayed and put back a few times.I was going to  borrow a friend camera that shoots in high definition but now he is probably  going to sell it on and it isn't the most up to date resolution  anyways.
To rent a camera  that shoots high definition quality video (as in what a lot of short films are  coming in on nowadays) is about £50 a day.  My short film production would  be about 2 days of shooting.
To buy such a camera  (a digital SLR to be precise) is between £650 and £700.
If was planning on  buying on it seems a waste to spend a £100 on borrowing one.
So if I put a bit  aside after each payday for it, I could have one in say 6 to 8  months.
Now I want one now  now now.
But really what  would I do other than look at it?  Truth is that what I am thinking is a  bit beyond my skills at the moment, having expensive kit is nice but it isn't  the be all and end all, and as I have covered in a previous post I have things I  can use now.
So if I start saving  after the next payday that gives me 6 to 8 months (an academic year more or  less) to get my skills up to scratch for when I get my eager mits on it and  IMMEDIATELY start putting it to good use.
So production will  be put back until then, which allows more time to prepare (get people organised,  shots, tests etc) and while I save up I shall :
  • learn to use my editing software on my computer
  • full come to terms with all the settings, and tricks on my current digital SLR so I can transfer   them to new one when it arrives (plus it REALLY won't hurt to get as much out of snapping away with it as possible in terms of   photography)
  • plus I can snap out  a storyboard on my slr.
  • have a good nose  around a few online film making tutorials (a lot of people who make digital   shorts often post a behind the scenes accompanying video)
  • go back through my filmmaking books from uni to get back up too speed on some of the lessons there.
  • use my camera phone, iPod touch and mini dv camcorder to shoot some other things (maybe   tests, maybe some actual shorts)
  • also figure out a way to get some good quality sound recorded

This is my new additional plan, I've planned additionally to the writing one.
