Character: Mail "Matt" Jeevas
Series/Fandom: Death Note
Original or Template version: Original
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Bisexual; prefers women.

Appearance: "Matt", as he is much more commonly called, is roughly five and a half feet tall; for his height, he's a pretty skinny guy, too. His dark blue eyes are always hidden behind his goggles, which he prefers to never take off, unless it's really necessary. His face is framed by messy, dark brown hair that's never quite lightened due to days spent indoors. Matt's likely to often be caught in his usual outfit: a stretched, striped long-sleeve shirt; worn blue jeans; combat boots; and (if the weather calls for it) his favorite ski vest.

Personality: Though he might be a certified genius that could have even succeeded the renowned detective L, Matt is very easygoing and quite unmotivated. He'd rather breeze through another handheld game than work on a mentally challenging puzzle, and tends to take things as they come. His attention span is also rather short, as he gets easily bored and almost always needs something to occupy his time. He can be rather sarcastic at times, and isn't above using profanity in everyday conversation. As far as his general social skills go, he doesn't exactly excel with communication, dislikes the outdoors, and does not have the ability to really live among society. Matt keeps to himself; it's a lot easier that way, but he's more than willing to keep up a conversation if the other party is willing.

Abilities/Strengths: As a former resident of the Wammy's House orphanage for gifted children and third candidate of L's potential successors, Matt clearly is a remarkably intelligent person. He excels with technology, be it computer hardware, hacking, surveillance equipment, phone taps, etc. He is also skilled in handling a gun, well-practiced in espionage, and an impressive driver. His laid-back attitude also gives him the ability to keep his cool even in the most unnerving of situations. Should one ever have Matt on their side, he can show a surprising amount of dedication and loyalty to get the job done, no matter what.

Weaknesses: Matt's awkwardness with society can be hindrance to him, though he doesn't entirely care; however, it can have him come off as just plain anti-social. He has a tendency to also lose his concentration easily and be careless, and has messed up plans due to these traits. Matt also has the bad habit of not caring enough to say "no" to those he is loyal to, even to the most ridiculous or dangerous of requests or actions. He's also a heavy smoker.

History: SPOILERS

Mail Jeevas was nothing more than a child when he had lost both of his parents in a tragic accident; one that made such an impact that, to this day, he cannot even fully recall the exact details of the event. After being briefly shuffled from one orphanage to the next, Mail's unusually high test scores (and only his test scores, as his teachers couldn't manage to get the child to actually do homework assignments) did not go unnoticed. Soon enough, his remarkable intelligence for his age enabled him to be taken into the Wammy House, an orphanage in Winchester, England. It was no ordinary institution, and was specifically designed to educate and train gifted children for a sole purpose: to find successors for the world-famous detective, L.

Once there, his entire past was erased, as was normally done with every child at the institution. The position of "L" was one that came with countless dangers, including death, and any possible replacement could not have that likelihood increased by having anything about them left around. And that included a history, name, and face that could be followed. After being taken in, Mail Jeevas no longer existed: now, he was "Matt".

Even a new name, however, didn't change Matt's usual lack of motivation. While he completed every challenge given to him with a considerable amount of brilliance and ease, Matt could hardly bring himself to entirely care whether he took the place of the great L or not. As far as he was concerned the top two contenders, Near and Mello (who certainly seemed like much more likely candidates for the job) could fight each other to the death over it. It made no difference to Matt who, for all his endless nights spent in a dark room with video game after video game, was ranked right behind the two geniuses.

Of course, all of this changed once Mello had decided to leave the institution. Something about over a fit he had that, now that L was dead, how were they supposed to figure out who would be a better L between Mello and Near? Matt had never bothered himself with the finer details; all he knew is that one day Mello was at Wammy's House, and the next, he wasn't, off to live his own life. Near wasn't too far behind, and Matt barely registered the other boy's disappearance, either. Though, that effectually made Matt the next likely to "officially" take L's place since Wammy House's favorites had all but vanished into thin air, likely planning their own ways of besting the other. The thought of possibly having to succeed L didn't exactly thrill Matt; he wasn't made for detective work, he knew that much. Once Matt was fifteen, he chose to mimic his former classmates and left. Where he was headed to, Matt had no clue; but he knew it had to be anywhere but Wammy's House.

Fast-forward to four years later; despite all his reluctance to have anything more to do with the orphanage or L (and his preference to do nothing more than just live the good life), Matt found himself answering a blocked call on his cell phone. Curiosity had always gotten the better of him, and on the other line was none other than his old fellow orphan, Mello. Something about blowing off half of his face while trying to capture some mass murderer to just show Near he could do it, and now Matt was one of his last trump cards whether he liked it or not. Though Matt had never been much for the news, even he couldn't have ignored what was happening in the world; criminals of every type, dying left and right by the hands of one crazed "Kira". A certifiable nutcase, by Matt's standards, yet he had no plans of taking on said madman; which was where Mello came in, naturally, as any person willing to take down Kira had to be a little crazy himself. Matt had hardly expected Mello to contact him, of all people; but Near was obviously out of the question, and after blowing up his last base with the corpses of his former mafia cronies, Matt figured that Mello didn't exactly have much to choose from. Being the third most talented to emerge from Wammy's House scored Matt extra points, and Mello managed to rope him into his plans to pursue Kira. While slightly reluctant, Matt proved to be a loyal, if not slightly careless and easily bored, partner. As a man who never really objected to anything, Matt followed Mello's orders without question, providing firm backup and assistance. For weeks, the pair monitored everyone and anyone with obvious ties to Kira, while Near formulated his own strategy. However, with everything slowly spiraling to the eventual end, Mello became aware that their haphazard plan to kidnap Kira's spokeswoman, Kiyomi Takada, was the only thing they could do to help, in even the slightest way, to finish off Kira.

On January 26, 2010, their plan was put into action when Matt fired smoke bombs at Takada's bodyguards outside the news channel building. This served as a distraction while Mello captured the woman, and either man made their getaway from the scene. Matt managed to evade capture well into nightfall, but was soon cornered when he ran into an unexpected roadblock by more of Takada's guard. Ever the calm operator, Matt was fairly sure that he'd be perfectly fine; after all, as Mello's accomplice in Takada's kidnapping, the guards were sure to want to question him for information.

Once out of his car and held at gunpoint, Matt barely managed a few joking words before countless bullets hit him at every angle. He dies almost instantly, not even finishing his last cigarette; shortly after, he awakes in an unfamiliar cathedral.
