It is not clear how Soubi’s personality was before his parents were alive, but it is certain that Ritsu shaped much of how he turned out. Because of Ritsu’s attachment with Soubi’s dead mother, he was left to live with him. This has scared him. Soubi knows that there is love out there, but because of how Ritsu beat him, Soubi does not believe that he deserves it. He is meant for fighting, and that was why he was left alive. He grows to become the best fighter.

When Ritsu gave Soubi away, the little value that Soubi felt he had was crushed. Soubi believed that since Ritsu took his ears, that he would be made the teachers new fighter. It was the idea that he held onto as Ritsu beat him. When that thread was gone, Soubi became very angry.

Ritsu gave Soubi away to a sociopath named Seimei. Seimei was younger then Soubi but gave him the pain that he desired. Because Ritsu had beaten him to form a bond, Soubi thought that the only way to move on from him was to be hurt again. That through being hurt a new bond could form and he could forget about Ritsu. Seimei knew that Soubi was becoming attached to him, but only used that against Soubi. He would yell at him and say not to touch him, only to turn around and carve Beloved deeper into Soubi’s neck. This tor apart Soubi, who wanted the pain, but did not understand why it didn’t bring them closer.

Soubi was able to make one friend during those hard times, in Kio, whom he attended college with. Though the only reason that Soubi first talked to Kio was because of his tattoo, he grew to trust him. He keeps Kio at arms length, but does allow Kio to follow him around and come home with him for drinks.

When Seimei is thought killed, it really tour Soubi apart. He masks his pain by blindly going to find Seimei’s brother and become his fighter and make the boy fall in love with him. Because of the treatment he received from first Ritsu and then Seimei, Soubi does not see a problem with doing so. He expects that the little brother of Seimei will be just like him, but he is not. Because of the open, and warm nature that the boy; Ritsuka, shows Soubi, he becomes confused. Part of him starts to remember that people can show him love, and the fighter falls in love with Ritsuka for real.

Soubi has to constantly deal with the line between doing everything that Ritsuka asks of him, and not telling him things that Seimei said were forbidden. Soubi was wholly attached to Seimei, and even when he thinks the man is dead, he still has a hold on him. It hurts Soubi to have to hold back information from Ritsuka since he really does love him.

Soubi never expected to have love, even to have true friends. However, he found that one-day he was living with the two kids that he had been raised to defeated, the zero boys. After fighting and defeating them, he suddenly found that he was taking them in. Natsuo and Youji are not well behaved, and he isn’t always the warm and fuzzy with them, but the three seem to come to an understanding of each other. He tells them when to go to bed and makes sure they have clothing and food. His attachment to them is clear when the boys go back to their school. Soubi becomes unhappy and depressed.

When Soubi finds Seimei’s new fighter making trouble for Ritsuka, he doesn’t want to believe whom he is. It crushes Soubi to hear Seimei’s voice on the phone because it means that two people have discarded him now. Soubi soon after takes Ritsuka to his old school. Ritsu teachers there, but the bigger shock to Soubi is finding that Seimei attacks the school. The fighter was torn between his old master and the one he was given two, he became unable to respond to anyone. In the end he smashes the windows for Seimei, and feels that he has betrayed Ritsuka.

Soubi is crushed by his choice, but some how Ritsuka forgives him, and even tells him to stop acting like an idiot. By the time they get home Soubi is still not himself. He doesn’t know what he should be doing since Seimei is still alive and well. In the attack they capture Nisei and use him to get back Kio, who was captured by Seimei. Soubi is relieved when his friend is back, but he is still a bit out of it from the shock of seeing Seimei. His old feelings, his need to be controlled, are contradicted by the independent and mature nature of Ritsuka.

When they all get home, Ritsuka comes to cheer Soubi up, which works because it reminds him of the fun times they were having before they thought that Seimei was still alive. Soubi decides that he will stay by Ritsuka’s side for as long as he can. While Ritsuka is still at Soubi’s place, the two zero boys come back as well. The combination of the three boys together again makes Soubi grin again. Though Soubi’s life isn’t perfect, it’s the only one he has.
