CHARACTER NAME: Badou Nails
SERIES: DOGS: Bullets & Carnage (also, DOGS: Stray Dogs Howling in the Dark)
EDENSPHERE NAME: Eyepatch
TIMELINE: Chapter 38
PERSONALITY: Badou Nails is obnoxious, tactless, and by default: an utter coward. However, don't be fooled by appearance alone, for Badou is a classic
Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass.
So long as he has a cigarette in his mouth, he can be pretty laid back, if not lazy and unmotivated. His sense of humor knows no limits. He doesn't feel the least bit inclined to censor himself, and he will pretty much say exactly what he's thinking, which frequently is a complaint delivered in the most petulant of manners. He can jump from amused to angry to laughing again in a matter of seconds, all depending on how much nicotine he has in his system or just the general mood of the conversation.
Badou can be quite the drama queen as well, which once again can vary from the amount of tar coating the inside of his lungs. To most, he comes off as pretty idiotic, spouting idle threats as loud as he can when the situation is not in his favor with a creative string of expletives and nicknames. However, he's not as stupid as he appears. He behaves rather childishly, oh yes, but it's not because he doesn't know better. He actually does; he just doesn't care.
He does have a more serious side. Take for example his business partner, Haine, whom he often teases or is generally his rude, obnoxious self around. He speaks as though he cares little for him or not at all. And yet, he does have moments where he appears to understand a certain extent of the torment Haine's faced and even appears to be empathetic for how it affects him in the present. Though if ever directly asked about him? Badou has nothing nice to say.
On top of that, Badou's own past is lined with tragedy. His half belligerent, half apathetic front actually hides something deeper. He's missing an eye and has scars on his hand that serve as a constant reminder. Like most stereotypical guys, he doesn't talk about his feelings, and he keeps his past well hidden, content with everyone else in the world shrugging him off as nothing more than a worthless, chain-smoking, annoying little brat.
And then there's his cigarette addiction.
Unlike most who are addicted, who will only snarl rude remarks when deprived, Badou will full out snap into a berserker frenzy. Normally, he has no desire to fight and is completely understanding of his limitations. He does his best to avoid conflict, and when he meets it, he runs away as fast as he can, screaming his head off. He's more than willing to toss dignity aside if that means self-preservation. Haine is the muscle of their operations, and he'd much rather leave that line of work to him, even expecting Haine to save him when he attracts trouble, which is frequent.
When his lungs start to feel a little too healthy, however, he will run into an entire gang of people, laughing maniacally, no questions asked, in a massive scene of bullets and blood until there is either nothing left or a cigarette in his mouth.
BACKGROUND: Badou Nails did not have what one might call an ordinary childhood. He comes from a dystopian world without seasons, where crime and organized syndicates are so common, almost the entirety of the populace is desensitized. Some inhabit the surface, others live within the depths of the Underground City. Among them are whispers of a deeper level, below ground, the Lowest Level.
Many dismissed this as just a rumor, if they had even heard of it at all, though the Lowest Level is quite real. Sending armies to kidnap children, they altered their genetics for the benefits of others, namely for the sake of biological weaponry. Few were aware of this nightmare, even less had seen it.
Badou's tale starts without parents, instead with his older brother, Dave Nails. Dave was far from the ideal parental figure. He regarded Badou like most brother's would, which meant picking on him in a playful manner and showing him how to live according to his ideal. Of course, Badou looked up to Dave, his only role model.
He smoked constantly, to the point Badou tried it himself as a child, though Dave did tell him not to. Badou even paid for them for his older brother most of the time and even developed basic household skills as Dave lacked them. They didn't exactly breeze through the most comfortable or secure life, but they made it by.
Dave lived a rather shady lifestyle, collecting important information. Such a life was dangerous, putting himself at constant risk, and despite his young age, Badou accompanied Dave every day and even aided him on (or as Badou put it: got in the way of) these missions as he refused to leave his side. While investigating the mass kidnappings, Dave picked up on the whispers of the Lowest Level, and as such, he intended to find it.
However, Dave and Badou had learned a little too much about the Lowest Level, and for that, they paid the ultimate price. They were attacked by a masked group wielding swords, and Badou was stabbed through his hand into his eye, losing it in the process. But that hardly compared to watching his older brother die in front of him.
Somehow, Badou survived this incident. As if following in his brother's footsteps, he developed his own addiction to nicotine, smoking nearly chronically. Perhaps imitating him, perhaps as means of coping. Probably a little of both.
He managed his own life into young adulthood, working as a grocery store clerk, obtaining his own apartment. Not just that either. Badou didn't exactly let go of underground work. He also started working as a freelance information broker as his brother had, digging for dirt on any association, generally collecting it via photography.
Among his associates is Mimi, another information broker. They sometimes exchange what they have learned, for prices, but mostly their relationship consists of Mimi picking on him. More times than not, Badou works with one Haine Rammsteiner: a pale, red-eyed recluse, genetically altered to have impressive strength as well as the ability to recover easily from even the most severe of injuries. Together, Haine is the brawn, and Badou is the... information collector. They either obtain their jobs through Bishop (a blind priest, who appears to be something of a mentor to Haine) or Granny Liza as their intermediary. As such, when working with Haine, Badou is shifted into a gun for hire more times than not, much to his dismay.
It doesn't end there though. Badou had resigned to a life of scraping by in a stingy manner. He lived on a day to day basis, a little too chaotic to be called repetitive, but then when one is surrounded in constant chaos, perhaps it's its own form of repetition. He doesn't forget his past though, biding his time until confrontation or the inevitable finally catches him.
However, a stink of luck that lands a picture of the don that runs the west side of district four (the Bordoni Family) on Badou's camera-in the most undignified display of homoerotic BDSM, mind you-ends with Badou meeting Mihai, an ex-assassin with his own elusive past.
Anything regarding Badou and his connection to the Lowest Level had been stagnant since the day his brother died, but when Haine and Badou are confronted and followed by a woman, Naoto, inquiring about just that, things start to reveal themselves.
Later, a mission from Granny Liza's "peaceful negotiations" result in another gunning showdown. This particular confrontation is far from typical when a pair of young, twin girls interrupt the battle, wielding guns and blades alike. These girls appear to have some connection to Haine and Naoto, Haine particularly, as they refer to him as "big brother." As such, after the twins have been summoned away and the trio returns to the church, Badou demands Haine recount the tale of his past, and he explains his experience within the Lowest Level. Though no specific motive can be pinned, it appears the past is starting to repeat itself.
Both he and Haine find it particularly odd that Bishop has seemingly left the church, considering he never does, but that hardly compares to the following series of explosions, invasions of unofficial trains plowing through the tracks, not to mention the rumored groups of masked militia wielding swords. Badou does not play witness to any of this and later inquires Mimi and Mihai about any information they have, under suspect this ties in with his past.
And perhaps he had once again uncovered too much, when he suddenly received an invitation for two to attend a symphony, with the promise of information that he would be interested in. Although he decides to go, Badou is suspicious and hires Mihai to accompany him, though Mihai stays hidden.
At the end of the performance, the conductor, Berthein, reveals himself to Badou as not only knowing about his past, but being the man who killed his brother and left Badou scarred. He claims that he deliberately let Badou survive that day.
But now he wishes to finish what he started, and Badou wants his own revenge. Berthein wields some sort of hypnosis power, able to sic the entirety of the orchestra against him, and despite Badou's best efforts, the situation looks grim.
Mihai, who had been hiding out, makes his appearance, and for a moment, the tables appear to turn in Badou's favor. However, when Mihai goes in to attack Berthein, a trick of the mind leads to him shooting Badou in the abdomen instead.
At this time of serialization, his fate is unknown.
ABILITIES: As far as natural skills go, Badou excels in the mundane: sewing, cooking, etc. He also has a talent for running. Although he is a smoker, he can actually run incredibly fast. He's outrun cars of mobsters before (and by outrun I mean: until he reaches Haine).
Despite coming from a world where genetic enhancement for aesthetic or biological weaponry purposes isn't unheard of, Badou doesn't have any super human prowess of that sort. Normally, anyway.
Beyond typical addiction and withdrawal, depriving Badou of cigarettes for a prolonged period is a trigger for chaos. As mentioned in the personality section, his state of mind hits incoherent levels, and he explodes with laughter and violence. Usually a coward, in this berserker state, he rampages on and on, with incredible speed and accuracy. He's unstoppable. Gun smoke calms him, but even then, he won't really cease until knocked out or a lit cigarette is shoved between his lips.
