A/N: For the joncerjumpstart prompt "I'll take it to-go.", it just got a little longer to be a regular comment fic. I haven't written this pairing in so long! It's nice to get away from real life with it. Just a cutesy little ficlet of sorts.

Jon is used to opening up shop every Wednesday, and he’s very used to the fact that the third or fourth customer is always the same person.

Jon looks up when the front door clings, as he always does, and smiles.

Spencer heads over to the counter and smiles at Jon. “The usual?” Jon asks, already reaching over to the machine to begin brewing Spencer’s cappuccino.

“Yeah,” Spencer says, and his voice sounds heavy and tired. Blinking and frowning, Jon looks up.

“What’s up? You sound really tired,” Jon says as he mixes the drink idly, curious about Spencer’s expression and the scruff over his chin - it’s more exaggerated than usual. Maybe he just didn’t have time to shave this morning.

“I guess I am.”

“Here or to-go?” Jon asks after a moment of silence, waiting for Spencer to smile with his usual For here because Jon’s just used to that.

“I’ll take it to-go.”

Jon blinks and then lets out a soft, “Oh,” before ringing Spencer up, this time without tax. Spencer hands him the two dollars and sixty six cents and, when they look at each other, he smiles, though he still looks exhausted, a little brokenly sad. Jon smiles back and tries not to look disappointed, adding, “Have a nice day.”

“You too,” Spencer well-wishes, and he leaves, the door clinging behind him.

Jon wipes his hands on his apron.

Jon is surprised when Spencer shows up the next afternoon.

“Hey,” he says when Spencer steps up to the counter - Spencer smiles at him, a little wryly, and rolls his shoulders. He looks nervous. “This isn’t really any of my business,” Jon begins, glancing around the little Starbucks, “but are you okay?” It feels awkward, them all alone in the tiny coffee shop, Jon start small talk.

Spencer blinks at Jon. “Huh?” he asks, obviously confused by Jon’s question. “Yes, I’m fine, of course, what made you think otherwise?”

Jon tilts his head and then shrugs, worried he’ll look stupid. “I don’t know, you…seemed out of it yesterday. Like. You didn’t…stick around. You usually stuck around”

Spencer blinks again and then his face cracks into a smile, the skin around his eyes wrinkling with it. Jon wants to smile back but it’s not a real smile Spencer’s giving him - something is still broken in his eyes. “I didn’t realize you liked it when I stuck around,” Spencer says as his face fades back to the little half smile he had been wearing before. “I didn’t think you’d care.”

Jon shrugs again, turning away from Spencer and pretending to check the smoothie machine. “I was just surprised. Are you sure you…never mind.”

“I was heading to a funeral.”

Jon turns his head, looking over his shoulder. “Oh. I’m sorry.”

Spencer shrugs. “It’s okay. It was my great aunt, and I never knew her very well. It was mostly seeing my mother and grandmother that really had my feathers ruffled…I’m sorry, I’ll stop rambling, I doubt you want to hear about my family.” Spencer chuckles but Jon just shakes his head.

“I don’t mind.”

Spencer smiles again, and it seems a little less sad. “Well, I’m sorry if I had you worried. Like I said…I didn’t think you cared or noticed.”

Jon scoffs. “Of course I notice. You’re hard not to…”

Spencer is arching an eyebrow at Jon as he speaks but he just shrugs. “But why are you here today?” he asks, changing the subject - he doesn’t exactly want to deal with his huge gay crush on Spencer right now. “I’ve noted that you come in on Wednesdays, and today’s Thursday.”

Spencer seems to hesitate a little, pressing his hand against the counter. “I don’t know,” he says slowly, chewing on his bottom lip. “Honestly.” He pauses again, swallowing, Jon still watching him. “I guess I just came here out of habit. Maybe because I didn’t stick around yesterday.”

Jon looks at his watch, not sure how it’s going to make sense but not really caring. Maybe Spencer will understand. He hopes. “Hey, I get off my shift in like…an hour. If you want…to stick around a little longer than usual.”

Spencer looks taken aback for a moment and then smiles again, and Jon realizes that he really likes Spencer’s smile. It’s kind of amazing. “Yeah, I’ll do that. I’m not busy today. Are you asking me on a date?”

Jon looks at his hands and has a moment where his heart swells in all of the wrong ways in his chest - dead nervousness - but then he nods. Slowly, at first, but the bobbing of his head picks up pace and he meets Spencer’s pleased gaze, still nodding. “I am,” he admits.

“Good,” Spencer tells him, glancing at the door as another customer walks in. “Get me one of my usuals, will you? I’ll wait for you.”

Jon grins and nods. “Yes, sir, it’s on the way.”
