Personality: Cadogan is generally a quietly cheerful person. He takes most everything in good spirits and tends to look on the positive side of things. Most of all, however, he wears his heart on his sleeve--happy, sad, confused, he's an open book in almost any situation.

Much though he tries to be optimistic, he does tend to shy away from extreme risk. Although he blames it on his time around children, Cadogan is inherently amazingly cautious. He doesn't like dangerous situations, overly tall buildings, lots of loud explosions. Unless it's in an action movie, he doesn't want it in his life.

He's fairly intelligent, no Einstein but quick on his feet. Cadogan approaches everything very methodically, like a puzzle he needs to figure out, taking everything piece by piece until it fits together. Much of the time, he enjoys thinking out of the box--there's always more than one solution to a problem, and he very much enjoys figuring out which of those ways is best.

Cadogan is only shy about one thing: the smoke. He's completely in control of it now (he would never have taken a job with children without being on top of the random bursts he had as a child), but it still tends to set him on edge. He tends not to bring it up, he very rarely shows it to anyone, and he tends to shut down when questioned about it.

Likes: Crime novels, children, cigarettes, solitude, small towns, Lost, lakes, coffee with two sugars

Dislikes: Fried food, discriminatory practices, crowded places, spiders, flashy clothing, conversations about mutants, alcohol

Background: Cadogan was born in a small hospital in Berlin, New Hampshire, to an Irish mother and Welsh-American father. He was named Cadogan for his paternal great-grandfather and given the middle name Eamon for his maternal grandfather.

His father was a foreign service officer employed by the United States. It meant a lot of travel even at a very young age. His mother did her best to keep him in smaller towns, away from the hustle and bustle of his father's big city life. As often as possible, she insisted they return to Llanfyllin, where Cadogan's paternal grandparents helped look after him. There were the first to notice two unusual things about their grandson.

First, that he was incredibly delayed in language development. Second, that he tended to be lost in a world of smoke.

The verbal delay was blamed on the constantly shifting languages his father's travel exposed him to until the age of 4, when audiometric screening revealed 55 dB hearing loss. Ever calm and understanding, his mother immediately began learning ASL (rather than BSL, partially sealing his future fate to live in the Americas) and researching schools for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The smoking... was slightly different. When Cadogan became upset or confused, his speechless mouth would simply leak smoke--if he were particularly excited about something, grey wisps would drift from his fingertips. It never seemed particularly harmful; in fact, the boy barely noticed unless it was brought to his attention.

A little research made the answer as clear his severe hearing loss: Cadogan was what the media now called 'mutant.' While both parents readily embraced entering deaf culture, his father was incredibly hesitant about the prospect of having a mutant son. Before he was sent off to boarding school, his parents made certain he understood that he needed to keep an eye on himself. Thus began his insecurity about the smoke which sometimes rose from his skin.

Cadogan spent the remainder of his childhood in transit--to school, to wherever his parents were--and in transition--through various forms of AAC to finally settle on ITE aids. He had settled himself in Belleville (more often out of his hearing aids than in) before his father passed. For a time he looked after his mother, but she soon returned to her own hometown in Ireland. For now, Cadogan is simply keeping his head down, trying to avoid anything interrupting the peaceful life he's made for himself. He's heard a lot about Alpha Flight, but finds himself incredibly resistant to the concept. His own abilities with smoke are shameful, in addition to being fairly unextraordinary. His current plan is to simply completely avoid attention.
