Physics, you lied to me!

For the most part I believed in you. Yeah, sure I didn't understand you sometimes, but people much smarter than me told me you were infallible and I trusted them and I trusted you. I did hear rumours that you broke down when it came down to quantum physics and strings and witch-craft like that, but hey, what does a simple minded computer science ( Read more... )

was it pure water or did it have dissolved salts/minerals in it? foreign substances dissolved in water will lower its freezing point, though it would have to be really salty to freeze below -12°C

I'm guessing lower air pressure and the relative humidity at the time were also deciding factors.

It was tap water, so it probably did have a fair amount of salts/minerals in it but like you say, I thought -12 was cold enough to freeze it even in that case.

patience, my friend, is the name of the game. We have like 3/4 deg and our fish pond is frozen. -12 is pretty cold. I dont think i can survive that.

I remember when i was a small kid ( was very curious...still am), tried to make popsicle out of ( of all thing!) daal ( as in daal-rice). It was one of the most horrible things I've ever eaten.

You have a fish pond?!!
That's so awesome :) So how do the fish survive in the winter? Is it only a layer of ice on top of the water?

yup, we got a fish pond in our garden. During winter, we have to pour hot water in the pond and make a hole so they can get oxygen. We were told never to hit the ice and crack it open cos the sound is too much for the fishes and that can kill them.

Its cold, windy and rainy today....i would do anything for B'lore winter right now *sigh*
