Last night I saw on the TEN late news, featuring the robotic Jessica rowe, that smoking is once again an issue. According to the news report 269,000 teens from 12-17 are regular smokers.
Blame was once again pointed at hollywood movies, for “glamorising smoking”, of course the films that they showed snippets from were Chicago (Catherine Zeta Jones), Basic Instinct (Sharon Stone), Thelma and Louise (Gina Davis), and a couple of others. The important point here is that they only people who ever smoke in movies are the bad guys or the mentally imbalanced, and the latter is actually relevant to the character.
Studies have proved that schizophrenics frequently self-medicate with cigarettes, and it actually helps them a lot. It’s probably to do with the nicotine.
And finally - where exactly are these kids getting the smokes from? It’s illegal to sell them to under 18’s, which was damn funny when my 17 year old girlfriend couldn’t buy smokes… nothing funnier than an angry, midget going through nicotine withdrawls….
