The UX50 CLIÉ Handheld with Free Case PEGUX50/UKIT1

The Clie' is very popular. The price is over $600. It has the wireless capability you want plus the keyboard and the camera.

Unless you want something a tad bigger (like I do)..
in which case I'm still looking but I thought I would give you something look at and you can tell me from there what changes you'd make.

looks good.

don't need a lot of the crap with it, but i imagine they don't make them minus mp3 player and camera nowadays.

USB would be helpful, but i imagine we are getting into computer stuff now.

but that's pretty much the sort of thing i'm after. a full size keyboard would be helpful, as i'm likely to be typing drunk or drugged. a lot. really.

but this is the sort of stuff i am looking for.

Cheers.

Gotcha - we're looking for "The Drunken Bastard's Portable Typewriter" disgruntledgrrl December 30 2003, 15:19:41 UTC
Then the Clie is not for you.

Look at the keyboard here.

It collapses something roughly the size of a palm and you slap the palm in on top.
I'm getting call on the Tungsten here at ExxonMobil and they aren't very good. A software problem (they put it out without the right software).
You'll note I'm checking OverStock.com I'm noticing a lot of Tungstens which isn't good for something so new. At Overstock it's good to get older items because they're being pushed out to make room for the new.
However, they've been nearly cleaned out due to the holidays. There's not much here and what's here is crap. But Is this closer to what you want?
No frills, lemme type, and save. To be able to update your journal from a pub and a camera is a plus?

(or tries to when he's not in a drunken stupor at home or belting out karokoe tunes to his playstation 2)

i'm struggling with the image of him sitting in front of his PS2 making ka-pow ka-pow, zap and zoom noises...

Well, since I can't check my Yahoo mail from work, here's where I'll reply to an email I've never read.

Okay, MRDs:
I have a Palm V, one of those indestructible beasts from years ago, with a black and white display. It was made back before MP3s were a big deal, so it's a no-frills kind of leetle bastard. Very outdated, but it does the job of Portable Word Processor.

Things to look for:
A) Durability.
I have literally run this thing over with a car. It has the aluminum protective case, and the only thing this six-year-old piece of hardware has damaged is a pinky-fingerprint sized area of minor screen burn in the lower right corner of the screen, and some cosmetic scratches on the case. It's been dropped at bars, flung against floors, taken through the French Quarter repeatedly, and sat on hundreds of times. Durability is a big thing- I've read that some of the Clies do not take this kind of punishment well. If you don't have durability in a PDA, what the fuck do you have? An expensive little toy that you have to pamper. Balls to that, I say - if you're going to have a portable ranting device, get one that you're not going to break by looking at it wrong.

B) Ease of Use
This one depends on YOU.
I actually wrote the barebones version of my novel on the Palm V using the nasty little 2.5 inch x 1.25 inch stylus keypad on the display. It was a big, hairy, overloaded BITCH to do. The first thing I did when I got home was to buy a fold-out keypad.
The problem with the keypad is that I never remember to take it with me. Ever. It's about the size of the Palm itself, and that means double the space taken up in my back pocket.
It's also a little bit unwieldy. Although the keys are ALMOST like a full-sized keypad, they're just slightly offset. This means I have to really concentrate to type at 3/4 the speed I do on a computer. Not likely when I'm at a bar.
I haven't tried a palmtop with a thumbpad keyboard yet, but it doesn't strike me as something that would be particularly better than the tiny digital display I use.

C) Size and capability
I've seen palmtop computers that range from literally palm-sized to three times that square area. I like the Palm V because it seems perfectly sized for my needs, which are:
- A portable word processor
- A phone book
- A calendar
That's all I use it for. If however, you're looking for something with Internet capability, then you probably can only get one that has other frills on it.
If you're looking for a beast that has a color display, can take photos, etc, why not just get a laptop? http://www.ubid.com has some amazing deals. I'm actually thinking of getting one with my tax return this year, and Bluetooth Internet can be fun if you're looking for mobile web access.
I would NOT recommend using a mobile phone for internet. I work for a company that offers this service, and there's several drawbacks:
- Mobile Phone connectivity usually costs not only phone airtime, but data allowance as well.
- While using it, your mobile phone is unavailable.
- You have to hook both of them up and hope the connections work.
I would, instead, recommend a wireless modem. It can usually be added TO your mobile phone account, and the companies offer specials that make it less expensive in the long run. The Sierra Aircard is a tough little beast, fits in a laptop, and can take punishment like nobody's bidness. We have literally thousands of people on our network with them, and we have to replace maybe one every two or three months.

As for mobile phones, it depends on how responsible you are financially. Most my friends will gladly tell you that I suck at my monthly expenses, and suffer times of surplus followed by months of starvation due to my lousy budgeting skills. I tried a regular Mobile plan, and got fucked. Now I use a prepaid phone, and although it might not be available in your area, Virgin Mobile has the best damned plans I've found for prepaid.

Any other questions, flog yourself with a live fire gecko and ask away.
