Summary: Ruby talks Sam into parting ways with Dean for a while.
Notes: Part of a verse called Rocket Queen, one I roleplay with a friend of mine. We're playing through canon with a few differences, including Ruby skipping the meeting with Lilith at the end of Season 3 and therefore keeping the blonde, and not sleeping with Sam during the summer. Title very lame, but I was never good at titling.
Ruby was outside the morning following her confrontation with the newly risen Winchester, waiting for him to leave the room for breakfast so she could talk the other out of following his brother like a lost little puppy. They didn't say a word to each other as he walked past, he just gave her a threatening look that warned her not to try anything nasty. She didn't intend to do anything other than her job, no matter what happened.
The demon let herself in half a minute later. She quickly surveyed the room, expecting to find Sam, but instead there were rumpled sheets and blankets and the sound of running water. By the time Sam exited the bathroom, rubbing at his hair with the towel that would be more modest wrapped around his waist, she was sitting cross-legged and comfortable on his bed, leaning back on her hands.
"That's a good look for you," she said, startling him and smirking as he quickly covered himself.
Sam cleared his throat awkwardly. "Ruby. What are you doing here?"
"My naked senses were tingling." Almost immediately her tone turned more serious. "I wanted to talk to you-about your brother and his angel."
Sam shook his head with a slightly sour look. "I'm not leaving him."
She pushed herself up from the bed and into standing position. "You have to."
"No, I don't! Do you mind?"
She stared him for half a second before turning around. "Not like it's anything I haven't seen before."
"Yeah, you've only walked in on me half a dozen times," he answered in a sarcastic tone. "What a coincidence."
She grinned to herself, listening to the rustle of cloth. "You say that like you don't enjoy it. Or would you enjoy it more if I were the naked one?" She took the silence as a yes, for which she was damn smug, but she dropped the subject. "Tell me when it's safe for me to turn around." A few more seconds of dressing noises and he answered.
She faced him with a sigh as he pulled a shirt over his head. "Look, Sam, I know you don't want to be separated from him right now. I mean, I'm not exactly in your brother's fan club. But he is your brother, and if I thought there was any other choice, I wouldn't be asking you to."
"Oh yeah? Didn't sound much like asking to me."
Ruby tilted her head a bit, keeping her voice and expression soft. "I was just giving him my opinion, just like I'm doing with you now. I won't tell you what to do, but I think you should lay low until Dean makes contact."
He scoffed. "I'm not afraid of angels."
"Well you should be," she said a little more firmly. "Sam, we don't know how an angel would react to someone like you. Especially with what we've been doing." He sighed and averted his eyes, but she kept talking, returning to the gentler tone. "I'm sorry, but I don't want to lose you. You're the only one who can stop Lilith."
"I know, I know," he said, nodding. "You're probably right."
"Personally? I hope I'm wrong and they realize why you're doing this." She crossed her arms over her chest. "Speaking of which. When are you telling Dean?"
"I'm not. Not yet, anyway." Ruby gave him a look. "I just need time, okay?" He sighed again and sat on the bed. "Have to figure out the right way to say it."
"Don't take too long," she answered. "He's going to find out sooner or later. Better if he hears it from you." She forced a little grin. "At least then he's got a convenient scapegoat."
He snorted, almost laughing as he looked up at her. "Yeah, because you held a knife to my throat and made me do your bidding."
Ruby's smile was genuine, bright like the kind of girl Sam would have dated before, but with a twisted smugness about it. "You wish." He did wish, in a certain sense, which made it that much more amusing. Before he could react with much more than that spark of hope and desire he would always deny, she turned on heel. "I'll be back later. Just because Dean's taking off for a little while doesn't mean we have to sit around and do nothing."
