Sometimes, Dean wakes up with the smell of scorched flesh, the sound of mangled screams lingering past the dreams, and a sinking feeling in his stomach like he’s in that dark place again, the one his mind refuses to remember.
It's terrifying on too many levels, and it always takes a couple of minutes until the sound of Sam's breathing next to him drags him back to reality. It's his one reminder that it’s over, that it all could have been worse, that it could have been Sam there.
And Dean knows he'll personally take hell over that any day.
