The more I see of the new Star Trek the more I wonder if it will be good. What makes me wonder this is the newest photos I have seen that presumably come from the upcoming trailer. Such as
this one. I'm sorry but it looks a little too hollywood and it also looks too advanced to be from Captain Kirk's era. It looks more advanced than The Next Generation, Voyager or Deep Space Nine which are set in the 24th century as compared to this which is supposed to be in the 23rd century. It almost looks like they are changing the setting of the original series to something more like the 25th Century or crossing it with Tim Burton's Charlie and The Chocolate Factory from the looks of the bridge there. Wasn't this one of the problems with Enterprise? That it was supposed to predate Kirk yet it seemed more advanced than Kirk. So far the set pictures from Star Trek seem advanced to the point of being overdone hollywood Sci-Fi cliches....
Zachary Quinto of Heroes looks
OK as Spock. But the rest do not look right to me. Sure Simon Pegg is an awesome actor but he doesn't look like Scotty. Same thing for Karl Urban as McCoy.
Most of them at most vaguely resemble who they are supposed to be. From left to right there's Chekov, Kirk, Scotty, McCoy, Sulu and Uhura. By the way the one who is playing Chekov is also going to be in Terminator Salvation (a.k.a. T4) as Sgt. Kyle Reese. He also doesn't look much like Micheal Biehn. But I digress. Someone said they seem to be using the "flavor of the moment" actors in Star Trek and that may be true. I'm sorry but kirk especially doesn't look like Kirk... and that black shirt he's wearing isn't helping.
Their uniforms look strange to me. Someone commented that it looks like they got them at the GAP or that "Kirk" is going to present some new Apple product. The colored uniforms give me the feel of some kind of Nike sports equipment more than they do Starfleet uniforms. I guess they are OK and I like the colors but something about them doesn't feel right. But I tend to be picky as to which starfleet uniforms I like. My favorite ones are the ones they introduced in
First Contact. My second favorites where the ones introduced in
Deep Space 9 (they used them on Voyager too). They where my favorites until first contact came out. Then after that my favorites are the
original uniforms. Mostly because I liked the Technicolors.
I don't care much for the
next generation uniforms nor for the
red ones in the original crew's big screen outings (although I used to like them back in the day). I mostly just tolerated them. So I guess these new ones are OK they just need to grow on me some more.
But then again there are certain things that I disliked or even outright hated at first but then they grew on me. I'd like to add this to that list but I'm not having good feelings about it at this time. The only thing that looks good enough to be excited about is Zachary Quinto as Spock. I just put a high res picture of him as my wallpaper. He's the closest thing to the original that they have so far in terms of looks. But I'm not as familiar with his acting abilities as others are because I never watched much Heroes so I don't know how good he would be as Spock. Spock was my favorite character in the original series so I hope that Quinto can do him justice.
Second best after that in terms of looks in these photos is Uhura. But that's not saying much. Sure she's a beautiful woman but is she Uhura? Someone else said if it was a few years ago they would have thrown in Halle Berry. I've read that Nichelle Nichols has given her advice and coached her some in her portrayal so she may end up being a good Uhura but I reserve judgement myself.
I guess you can say that at this point I'm not totally sure what to make of the art direction of the film nor can I be sure about the plot either. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. The series has been in need of freshening up for the non-hardcore masses so if this is what it takes then I guess it's OK. I just hope that it ends up being good.
