I have been reading recently that they are making a Dragonball movie. There are a few things that seem pretty good so far. Like the fact that Stephen Chow is producing (he directed Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, both good movies in my opinion) and it has Chow Yun Fat in it as Master Roshi. I have a mixture of optimism and skepticism about it. It may be a good way to waste a $1.50 at the bargain movies though. ;)
Here's the thing though... I've read people commenting at articles like
this one and worrying about how good it's going to be because they grew up with Dragonball and don't want for them to mess it up. I was under the impression that most Anime fans have disowned that series a long time ago? Same thing with a lot of them and Sailor moon since in their view those shows where A) not good to begin with and B) "Raped" to death being brought over and dubbed\edited to hell and back. I personally thought it was OK until it became a Super Saiyan power escalation match. Where the only way to go from there is more and more powerful "spirit bomb" (read atomic bomb) powers. :P
Oh yeah you may have noticed, yes.. the guy who played Tom Cruise's son in War of the World is playing Goku in that movie. Also, I've read
the guy who played Spike in Buffy (he also came out in the first episode of TORCHWOOD of the new season) is going to be Piccolo... also
this girl is going to be Bulma.
So, Anime fans in my list what is your opinion? Movie to look forward to or just another example of them milking a tired, dead franchise that wasn't good to begin with? I'd like to read your opinions of this and of Dragonball in general. Don't pull any punches either I'm not all fanatical about that series so I don't care.
