Well, the
new iMac has been announced. I'm underwhelmed by the new design of the iMac. I saw it and was like.. that's it? I am not sure I like the black bevel around the monitor and the black back looks
ugly in the pictures. I'll have to see it in person. The main problem with it right now in my opinion is it still has the big fat chin at the bottom of it ruining the iPhone look it's trying to go for. I also don't like how the wireless keyboard lacks the number keys but now I see why they moved the volume, etc. over. =P which I also don't like. I was hoping for the wireless keyboard to be the same as the wired one only wireless.
They also went with ATI again this time for the iMac which they say isn't performing as well as nvidia this time around but any model can now play Quake 4 passable at lower resolutions\settings.. I just saw
this benchmarks which shows how it's the slowest of all new cards and it's even slower than some older cards. Some have said it is a complete slap to the face of Mac gamers. Especially with DirectX10 either the 8600 or the ATI equivalent can't hack it with games like Call of Juarez only getting 10FPS.. that's non playable for those who don't know.
The point is Apple has chosen to go with the slowest of the new video cards for the new iMac. They should have gone with the 2600XT rather than the 2600 Pro (which is the slowest believe it or not.. don't let the Pro part mislead you) at least for the higher end models and for the highest end they should have put in an nvidia 8800 mobile considering you'd spend as much on it as for a Mac Pro. The Mac Pros older video card still outperforms the newer iMacs video card.
Also it looks like the death announcements of the Mac Mini where premature. It didn't get a graphics update but it now has a Core 2 Duo. But no it's not dead. ;)
Also it looks like the
keyboard I was featuring the other day is the real deal. My comments
earlier on that still stand... I also am not going to run out and spend 50 bucks for the privilege of having it right now. It's 50 for the wired and 30 more for the wireless (minus the keypad). But it's the best part of this update in my opinion.
