The Yahoo Group on SCA-Garb is a wonderful community! They've just saved me a bit of heartache & work in using the portrait of Catherine Parr as inspiration for a dress. I was planning on making a corset and farthingale to wear underneath it, but in discussing this outfit, someone brought up the fact that she was probably wearing a kirtle under it. Here is the message from Aspasia Moonwind that outlines the layers:
re: The Tudor Tailor by Ninya Mikhaiula and Jane Malcolm-Davies... p.78-81.
layer 1 chemise
2 red petticoat pleated into its bodice with minimal front and tied
at front waist.
3 kirtle with skirt pleated into bodice. bodice is heavy lined
calico (muslin U.S.) and lightly boned if needed. The back is v cut with
long straps that reach to the front which are slightly curved. Often wool.
4 Gown.
alinore has this book, and is letting me borrow it Wednesday so I can read this section myself.
I'm happy I don't have to put myself through wearing a corset (I know, I know...they're not that bad!), but now I have to worry about fitting a kirtle. We'll see how it goes... Help & advice would not be turned aside. *grin*
