2 Broke Girls 1x01 - Pilot

So truth - I pretty much only watched this because of my ♥ for Kat Dennings. That said...

2 Broke Girls 1x01 - Pilot

Plot Summary
Max and Caroline waitress at a diner. Max is hard-nosed and street-smart and working-class and has lots of snappy putdowns. Caroline used to be rich (her father's sort of portrayed in absentia as a Bernie Madoff analogue) but her family has lost its fortune and all their assets have been seized, leaving her homeless (where is the rest of her family?) and in need of work. Clearly her comedic factor will come from her spoiled prissiness!

That is what you get from the commercials. Even with the 3.5 minute extended edition on YouTube, you really only get the additional bit where Max's studly but jerky boyfriend hits on Caroline, Carolina tells Max, thus alienating her, Max returns home to find said studly but jerky boyfriend cheating on her, throws him out, and invites Caroline to move in. Standard sitcom stuff.

But there's one more thing I didn't know was coming. Max bakes cupcakes to sell at the diner. Caroline has a degree from Wharton Business School. Their Master Plan (to simplify matters) is to save up $250K to start their own bakeshop. The end credit has their current total, which after the pilot is $387.25. That I am kind of all about. (Yes, yes, a cupcake shop is sort of overdone and cliche and a little sexist but whatever. My great-grandfather owned a bakery and I have Great Love for stories about it.)

Characters
I figured I would like Max on the sole credential that she is played by Kat Dennings and find Caroline horrifically dull and annoying. That didn't turn out to be the case. I still like Max a lot, but I also didn't hate Caroline. She grew on me pretty quickly and well, a lot of her complaints would have been my complaints. (Not clam chowder, OMG.) Also I think she hit the nail on the head pretty well when she told Max they'd have to work on her self-esteem. (A lot of Max's humor is really pretty self-deprecating.)

That said, OMG Caroline, you can NOT waitress in those shoes. I'm willing to let tv characters be a little ridiculous in terms of clothes and makeup and whatever but wow, I wouldn't even be able to walk down the street in them.

Every other character is male...except for the mother of the twin babies Max cares for as a day job, who is supposed to be Caroline's counterpart, I guess. She's sort of a caricature of a rich, spoiled celebutante - she even named her babies Brad and Angelina. I was meh on her, Oleg the cook at the diner who is a walking sexual harassment claim, and the diner owner - Han Lee (who changed his first name to Bryce), but Earl won me over before he even had a line. In Kat Dennings' intro scene, he is already cracking up at her.

Techy Stuff
I didn't really notice this right away, because I never notice these things but reccea pointed it out - the laugh track is totally hosing the girls' comic timing. They'd do well to get rid of that. Also I have no idea what they're going to do with that horse.

Yeah, my headers suck
So in conclusion: AO3 does not seem to have femslash yet. But it will. I am sure of it.

I am watching way too many shows to keep this up but it's fun for now. :)
