Spock woke up to see Jim Kirk's face hovering over him and Doctor McCoy's voice shouting, "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!"
"Fascinating," he said.
"You know, you talk in your sleep," Kirk said, offering Spock a hand.
"I do nothing of the sort," Spock replied, using Kirk's hand as leverage to pull himself to his feet. "Any words I may have spoken between connecting to the Horta - the creature calls itself the Horta - "
"So you said when you were talking in your sleep," Kirk interrupted.
"- and lapsing into full unconsciousness were involuntary recitations of knowledge learned from the mindmeld. Specifically, they were thoughts the Horta wished to convey to all." Spock lifted an eyebrow when he saw Doctor McCoy slapping a layer of fresh concrete over the side of the Horta with a spade.
"Thermoconcrete," McCoy called proudly over his shoulder. "I could cure a rainy day!"
Spoke turned his inquisitive eyebrow to Kirk, who shrugged.
"When you were talking in your sleep, you said it was a silicon-based lifeform," Jim said. "So I figured, why not put a silicon band-aid on it? You know, it's a good thing Janus VI has a year-and-a-day rule. A few more months and Vanderberg might have been in some trouble if this puppy died."
"No Federation planet has employed a year-and-a-day rule since Earth's mid-twenty-first century," Spock reminded Kirk.
"Mining colonies operate under old Earth common law," Jim said. Spock glanced at McCoy, who responded with a raise of his own eyebrow. "What? You people act like I never did homework!"
Reboot version of Devil in the Dark? It's been a while since I've actually seen it so I stole the names from Wikipedia. That was perhaps my first run at Reboot. *wince*
