Aaron Hotchner looked up to see JJ in the doorway of his office. Her face was solemn. "What is it?" he asked.
"Tammy Pilsner died this morning," JJ said.
Hotch bowed his head in a brief moment of silence. Tammy Pilsner had been shot in the head by an unsub seconds before Hotch's own bullet had torn through his shoulder. They had both lived, the unsub to await a serial rape and murder trial, and Tammy to have to teach herself to tie her own shoes and fear simple infections.
"What was it?" he asked, glancing up.
"Pneumonia," JJ said.
"Which wouldn't have been fatal if her immune system hadn't been compromised," Hotch said. He tapped his fingers on the desk. "How long has it been?"
"Three-hundred and seventy-eight days," JJ says, and Hotch stops.
"More than a year and a day," he said wryly.
JJ reached out and lay a printout on his desk. "It happened in Maryland," she said. "I had Garcia check - they don't use year-and-a-day. Death may occur at any time."
"In that case," Hotch said, feeling grateful that JJ watched out for the victims just as well as she did the rest of them. "Get ahold of the AG, have them add another count of murder in the first degree to the pending charges."
Another life sentence on top of the others might not mean much to the unsub, but it meant Tammy Pilsner would have justice for her death.
I am so not a doctor. This should be blindingly obvious. Please forgive me?
