Two great tastes that taste great together?
Sorry, I'm writing a 3-day take-home partnership tax law exam and it's clear that my professor is...possibly a little crazy.
Anyway, because
DreamWidth is now open to the public, I figured I'd throw out a few of the things I've been thinking about and see what ya'll have to say.
1) I still can't decide what I want to use DreamWidth for. I have been on LJ a long time and I'm used to it and I'm like those crotchety old people who make developers raze entire blocks around them. That said, DreamWidth is SHINY. It's kind of like moving to a new apartment and being able to set up things any way you want without tripping over the old stuff. And I kind of want to use it just as a writing journal.
Pros for this: Shiny! Separate! Fan-friendly! I can have organized icons and tags and...stuff.
Cons for this: Maybe I should back up my LJ? That imports everything right? Which negates the awesome effect of building something new. But what if something happens to LJ? I have 8 years of stuff piled up and it's not all (or even mostly) on my webpage. Maybe I should have a backup.
2) I am skeptical of this crossposting thing. I have downloaded iJournal for my Mac but you can only log in to one thing at a time. Do you just save the entry and log in as the other platform and post it again? Do I want two identical journals floating around with double entries? Which is handy if one goes down, but...is that likely? (I know, strikethrough. And yet. I am lulled by my eight years of complacency.)
3) I set up an OpenID thing and then got a code, so now I kind of have two accounts and the circle don't match. Is there any way for me to smush them together?
4) Just FYI for the time being, I am doing reciprocal subscribing/permitting access for anyone who subscribes/gives me access, for now. I may have to change that in the future, or, as in LJ, filters may fix everything. This is just notice that I expect to have to do this for my own sanity. Which is usually kind of on the brink anyway. ;)
5) I have two invite codes for the first two people who write me Rossi/Prentiss or Weir/Sumner comment with an email address they would like me to send it to. (Seriously, don't write me fic; it'll take you too long and you'll miss out.) I confess, I set aside the first couple for friends I knew didn't have accounts, but these two and whatever future ones are available, even if we've never spoken before. (Okay, and 2am may not be the best time to offer up such things and yet.)
Invite codes claimed! I'll let ya'll know if I come into possession of any others.
Now, back to the cruel mistress of subchapter K.
