Veronica Mars Spoilers

For Lise, mostly, and anyone else who wants to kibbitz.

Spoilers for Veronica Mars through the VERY END so don't look if you haven't watched.

Lise: remember what you said at Dexcon about Rob Thomas saying the first episode has all the clues you need to figure out who did it?

I was reading some gossip columnist, Kristin, who was talking about information she got at a party with the cast and crew of VM and she said that they told her everyone knew who the murderer was by the second episode. It's also relayed that Rob Thomas was nervous about the news being leaked and had a backup -- which was that Duncan had done it.

So I just watched the first episode over again to see if the clues were there. I don't see them. There was Lilly saying she had a secret and the tagline that Logan was a psychopathic jackass, but nothing that points to Aaron even a little bit. If RT thinks that it's an easy jump from Lilly having a secret to her sleeping with her boyfriend's movie-star father...he needed to have a scene indicating that Lilly had another lover apart from Logan. Just...throwing that out there. Because no.

BUT. If Duncan was supposed to be the killer originally, or if that was part of the intended diversion associated with the statement, then yeah. Because there's two lines toward the end...one of them is Keith saying, "Who's your daddy?" and Veronica replying, "You are." Because wow is that ironic after watching the rest of the season. And then there's a line that I'm not taking verbatim but it's something along the line of, "I can only assume that Dad's doing what he did to protect me. That's what fathers do." (Italics mine.) That's a direct point that Jake Kane was protecting a child and as Lilly's dead, Duncan's the only one left.

Also, because I can't help the Logan love, even if 'rith is right and his creepiness is coming out (remind me, I have a fic idea I absolutely don't want and wish to pass off on you) I took this talley of the Bad Things that happen this episode.

When Logan beats on Veronica's car, he breaks the headlights. Having never put out a headlight, I can assume this is costly and annoying and she certainly can't drive the car far without getting stopped by the police and ticketed. But he never touches the body of the car, which is infinitely more annoying and I'm guessing, also more expensive to fix. He IS mean to Veronica, though, and that makes me sulk on him.

Weevil, whom I love, though, took that crowbar to the hood of a car that wasn't even Logan's AND broke the headlight. (I still say the kid who drove his mom's car to help a friend terrorize someone else might be stupid enough to deserve it, but that's another can of worms.) He also terrorized Wallace even though Wallace tried to cover things up for him later.

Veronica, though, is not a good girl. Not even a little bit, which gets lost in the fact that she's the star. Veronica gets off a couple of kids stealing from a convenience store. (I thought they were underage and swiping booze for a while, but I think that might have come up under Sheriff Lamb's testimony and even Veronica's tape wouldn't have helped. (Although the lawyer didn't ask for a dismissal in the kids' case, he asked for a dismissal in Loretta Cancun's, who is the delightful bitch in one of the last two or three episodes. I *heart* continuity.) She also, pretty much for fun, plants drug paraphanalia in Logan's locker and gets him busted. That's...yeah, it was funny, but it's also kind of awful. At least Logan's still a minor and will have his record sealed when he turns 18. (Also, his father probably got the charge dropped eventually.) Either way, it obviously does not pay to have Veronica mad at you.
