Rarely have I anything substantial to add. Let the pros blog, and I'll kibitz.
CPAC was fun, but do we need yet another JTP shot? )

I, personally, think one of the best ways to develop a decent understanding of islam is to follow the news within the islamic world from the perspective of non-conforming women, non-muslims and apostates within those countries. Islam is about submission. They'll let you live as long as you accept to live in submission to islamic law. That means, for women, gender aparteid, legal wife beating, legal underage marriage, tripe tilaq divorce, circumscribed movement, dress and access to self sustaining work, and of course, accepting the authority of the husband, father, etc. to "maintain" you in islam and in accordance with islamic norms through violence and fear (per Q4:34). If you're a non-muslim, it means, never, ever, ever seeking to proseyltize a muslim, practicing your faith in a submissive, less open manner, and, per the pact of Umr, limiting your ability to build a house of worship of repair an existing one. For an apostate, it means living your truth in secrecy and never, ever openly criticising Mohammad, the Quran or islam on pain of death (or at least de facto forced immigration to dar al harb).

I addition to jihadwatch, I would recommend "religion of peace" as a good resource. Also, follow the news in islamic countries as it relates to islam issues(a swift perusal of the archives at compass direct or MEMRI will help)- you'll get a good feeling for it soon enough.
