My "A" as Arlington not Capital!

Daughter loves practicing writing her name. I have never sat down and taught her how. She learnt it all on her own! She knows how to write her name in all caps. She has always watched me with great interest when I write her name on name tags out for library story times ( Read more... )

cuteness prevails, learning

Ha ha ha...never heard anyone possessive of letters.

BTW, my mother tells me that I learned to write all by myself...and back then there were no day care to go. She says that I was disturbing two of my aunts who were still in college and studying. Well, I now know I was a very curious girl even as a child. :) Anyways, one of the aunts one day got home a book with just the letters A to Z printed on each page, a slate and a chalk piece. It seems she told me that those are my books and I have to read them or write them or do whatever I want but they are mine. Watching them I guess I eventually learned to write the alphabets on the slate. I was 2 years I guess or may be a little older...not beyond a few months...then. :P

And yes, I know I am boasting...but couldnt resist posting. :)

ha ha.. didn't see it as boasting. Just further proof that kids tend to be very observant and we really don't need to load them with so much "education"! It's also a reason I got her a chalkboard! And it really helped! And it was fun for her! The book, Einstein Never Used Flashcards (I think that's the title) was a great read for this reason exactly!

All the squiggling they do is their form of "writing" and that's how it starts! (A reminder our librarian also pointed out. I would tease D when she would want to write her name on the tag. The librarian stopped me and said, for her she wrote her name. Don't discourage it!). I really could see that with D. How slowly her squiggles began changing to letters that made sense! Now, it also forces me to handwrite more often as she enjoys sitting and watching! :)

My kid has been doing the same thing! She frequently notes that Mommy and her name both start with "M"--and other letters of the alphabet are claimed by her classmates: "O like Oliver, I like Ingrid, etc." Good work on the name writing! My kid often just writes MM on her pictures; I didn't make it easy with her 8-letter name!

oh that's a great start too! My daughter will go, my friend's name is "Rach-Hel" (Rachel) and her name starts with an H or "Horri-Son (Harrison) and his name starts with an S! lol… so we are still to get there! :) It's always fun to see the different things they pick up on/interests them!

That was really cute to read. I suppose we do start to identify with the letters that make up our names.

It's interesting to see what kids will pick up on! When I've been around my niece and nephew lately, I've tried to be a little more careful of what I do/say.

It's a lot of fun how the whole process of "learning to read/write" starts… for a long time all alphabets are just symbols and as you read more and more they figure that they make words..oh it's such joy to see when they make that connection!

And kids are sponges, even when they are looking busy playing they pick up all that you say! scary and fun! :)
