As a teenager I craved the night in the summers. Authority had gone to sleep and the city was open for my friends and I to do as we liked. There are numerous ways to go about deceiving authority. The most highly publicized being having sex and getting drunk. We were all the arty kids at an Advanced Science school however so these were not our accustomed ways to relating to each other. We climbed elementary school roofs, jumped the fence and laid in the Botanical Gardens at 3am, and skinny-dipped in the municipal pools. The middle of the night is the proper times for these activities because in the day they would no longer be possible. Where is the magic in an elementary school in the daylight? How can you see the moon rise from a Japanese Pagoda over a forest of Bonsai trees at 3pm? And how can one allow water to flow completely over their bodies when there are other people there to gawk and point? The absence of people except for those we invited was the bait that led us to leave our houses at 11pm, not to return until the light had driven us back to our houses. I covered my windows with black paper in order to be able to sleep in the day more comfortably.
