Random Prompt Generator, Mac Taylor / Jane Parsons / scars.
“Mac discovered her.” Stella crossed her arms over her chest, trying to protect herself from the chilly hospital hallway. “The lab was a mess, she was bleeding from her stomach and arm. The attacker took half her notes, some samples that he seemed to grab at random, and her hard drive. I was upstairs, Chad, Chad was downstairs.”
“I didn’t see anyone, but I was trying to finish up so I could go home.” Chad had curled up in one of the hard plastic chairs the moment Jane had disappeared behind the ER’s swinging doors. “I was running a PCR, the next thing I know, I hear Mac calling for someone to get an ambulance, so I did. I didn’t, I didn’t know what was going on until I heard Mac.”
“I can’t stop thinking about what might have happened if I had decided to just go home.”
She’s a little shocked by the admission, but she recovered quickly, searching her recollection of the past couple hours in an attempt to come up with something to comfort him. It’s an odd feeling, trying to comfort Mac Taylor, of all people, but she just reminds herself that he’s human too, just like the rest of them.
“She has amazing defensive wounds.”
“Excuse me?”
“Leave it to a DNA tech.” Kaile tried to smile, but Mac was still expressionless. “She…dug her fingernails in like you wouldn’t believe, you know? You could probably make a whole new finger with what was under there.”
“Were there any hits on the DNA?”
“There were no hits in any criminal databases, but Adam’s double-checking each one, to see if maybe it was someone related to one of her current cases. He’s also running the DNA through any database he can get his hands on.”
He still wasn’t moved. Gathering her courage, she stepped forward, placing what she hoped would be a reassuring hand to his shoulder.
“You know, I think she bit him even.” He looked away, and she tightened her grip. “C’mon Mac. Doctor’s said she'll be fine, save for a scar or two. All because of your quick acting.”
He didn’t look away from her face. “Kaile. I want this guy. Yesterday.”
“I understand Mac-”
“He attacked one of my people, in my lab, and then just walked out. He left Jane to bleed out on the floor-”
“I know Mac, aright?” She didn’t mean to snap, but it sort of came out that way. “We’re doing everything we can. I’m doing everything I can. I’m not sleeping until this guy is in a cell, convicted of whatever it was he was so desperate to hide and then some.”
Mac nodded finally, looking slightly less tense than before her tirade.
“Thank you Kaile.”
She stepped back, releasing his shoulder finally. “Never a problem Mac. Just…give us some time.”
“I will. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize. Someone did this to one of the guys at the station? I’d want his still-beating heart on my desk.”
Mac smiled slightly. “By lunch, right?”
“Exactly.”
“Exactly.”
