Getting Around the Roadblocks!

Boy it's hard to change, isn't it? I mean I can change and do, but it's like watching partially frozen molasses coming out of a jar that only lets one drop out at once...

REALLY, really s-l-o-w. . .

I wake up every morning determined that today will be different, I will be a powerhouse, a whirlwind of activity... and it just doesn't happen.

What you're saying here speaks to me so much. I've tried countless systems to get on top of my disorganized housekeeping, never being able to control my household chores. Never being able to remember to do one thing after another. Always feeling like a failure. Always feeling incompetent for what ought to be small, simple tasks.

What is finally beginning to work for me is decluttering to the point where I pass a "clutter threshold", defined as "that amount of stuff you can handle without it becoming a problem". My first success was in decluttering my wardrobe. I had no idea that I owned as many clothes as that. I had no idea how happy I could be with 1/2 or even 1/4 of what I once owned. I had no idea that the space itself becomes nourishing to the soul, not just the accumulation of more "stuff", however neat the stuff might be.

My current approach is to prioritize daily dishes. That's not "difficult", but it's a daily need that cannot be ignored, or it becomes exponentially more difficult the longer it is left. After dishes, my next priority is to see that I stay on top of laundry. That does not mean doing laundry every day or week, but being sure that laundry is being handled responsibly so it does not pile up. The last big habit I'm trying to establish is vacuuming. I have to keep disturbing the habitat so fleas cannot breed and become a problem again. I HATE and LOATHE fleas! I'm happy that my frequent vacuuming seems to be working to break the flea cycle. Wish me luck as i try to carve these three big habits into my brain for daily use.
