"I'm Not So Much Staring At Your Tits..."

Dec 14, 2008 18:31

...Tommy began while we were sitting around the table at karaoke & I laughed loudly. Things went a bit downhill from there as Tommy tried in vain to backpedal & just ended up digging himself deeper. He asked Kilbane to take the metaphorical shovel away from him before he hit China, which resulted in Kilbane declaring that I had the "Mt. Everest of cleavage". I just laughed even harder. I'm not comfortable with most of my body but I *am* comfortable with the Twins.

Eventually, Tommy managed to spit out that he was actually staring at my necklace. It was one of my Twice-Told Tales cigarette paper pendants on a black cable-- the very first one I'd made that inspired the whole idea at a previous karaoke night a few weeks back. He & Kilbane had both been there- in fact, the paper was from one of Kilbane's packs. They both remembered when I mentioned it was the same one. I'd initially put it on during the Running With Scissors Craft Fair to show off the new line & had kept wearing it to see how it would fair for the rest of the day. I held up *very* well-- even after hours of dancing & getting caught under my heavy purse strap, it held it's shape & didn't tear or anything. Yay! My next step with them is going to be to work on bails of some sort to attach them to the cables. And to play with the designs more.

The Running With Scissors Craft Festival & Concert went quite well. I can't say extremely well because I only sold one thing- a "Hold On" pendant ( the charm from this bracelet, but with an aventerine cab, which was purchased by one of the Metals kids mother, to my great amusement) but it didn't look like anyone sold a lot of stuff. I expected that, considering the economy & how people aren't buying nearly so much as previous years. Still, turnout was quite good & a lot of interested folks came through to check out work-- including people who do *not* normally show up to see the bands that were playing. I was very pleased to run into an old friend I haven't seen in a few years, K, who told me she came in on a whim just to see if I might be there, as well as J,a woman from the local SCA Shire who's big on paper arts. I was especially surprised to see J there as she's closer to my Mom's age & really *not* into that sort of music. She pointed out that she *was* really interested in unusual crafts & observed that the band wasn't hurting her ears nearly as much as she expected, which she attributed to hearing loss as she's gotten older. The band that was on when she came in was Aggro-Hippie & they were easily the loudest, angriest, least accessible & least melodic band that played. Metals Prof S & her family showed up during the same band. It was unfortunate, really, because the other bands that played were just as good & much easier to listen to. One poor little boy who couldn't have been more than 4 was trailing after his mom with his fingers firmly planted in his ears. And while I like that kind of music, as a vendor I'd say that they didn't help the cause, so to speak. For one thing, I couldn't talk to any of the people who stopped to look at my work at all. For another, it's hard to sell stuff when half the people there are trying to get out the door before they suffer permanent damage to their ear drums. But Bob's new band, The Yawn Thieves, were *really* good. They mixed in a lot of middle eastern & world beat rhythms; they'd be great for tribal fusion dance. And of course Matty B & the Dirty Pickles were fantastic as always. That kid's got an *insane* amount of energy!

After Running With Scissors was Rock for Tots, which was both a fundraiser for Toys for Tots and a birthday bash for Metals Jess, at the Urraro Gallery. It also featured the Yawn Thieves & the Dirty Pickles (who all then went to go play at a local bar, too. Apparently, they thought 2 gigs just wasn't enough for one day). I didn't hear the last band at R4T because I'd promised Kilbane I'd put in an appearance at the new karaoke place as our favorite DJ finally got a new gig. The first band was a group called The Jungle, who had an amazingly cute guitarist & sound-wise fell into the narrow space between Jack Johnson & G. Love & Special Sauce. I liked them much more than I would have expected (seeing as I don't care for G.Love) & may check them out again when they play the Sandbar later on this month.

Friday night was my company's Christmas Party, which was a lot of fun. Money Man's wife is very cool & funny, Cinderella's friend-who's-a-boy & HR Gal's Husband & I all bonded over wanting to play RockBand- they both like the guitar stuff & I want to do vocals. All we need is a drummer. :-) I told them they have to let me know next time they go out because I had such a good time. :-)

Now, between dancing like a maniac all last night & then dance practice today, I am very sore.
