Birthday Dinner & Entertainment

Whee! Had a really good birthday. Mom bought me a gift- a nice-sized coffee mug that says "Home Is Where My Tools Are", which is perfect. She also mentioned that she's planning on paying for my car inspection with is due in April, mainly because I don't have a job so I can't pay for it myself. Mom, GeekBro & Aunt D took me to dinner at Molly Brannigan's, where I was sad to discover they no longer have their seafood boxty that I loved. So, opted for the Fisherman's Pie instead (like Shepard's Pie, but with seafood) & it was very good. The family commented on how traditional Irish food always seems rather bland in comparison with other foods. I happen to really like it, though. Had a good time with them, sitting around & chatting & then they left & some friends arrived for the heavy-drinking portion of the night. The person I was most surprised to see was bissonmomma since she's rarely able to get out but it was wonderful to have her there. She rightly observed that B talks a *lot*- & last night even more than usual. He was all hyped up from an Obama campaign meeting, which it turns out that he's working for. It was almost impossible to get a word in edgewise! Got to see PRM, which was very cool & was very surprised to learn that he's going to be a Dad in about 6 months. He seemed only a little freaked out & more happy about it. His girlfriend seemed really nice, too. :-) I had a nice selection of drinks, too. I had a couple of Molly's Snakebites, which is a pint of half Guinness, half Strongbow Hard Cider. I also had a Kahlua Espresso martini, which was really good & a Rusty Nail, which PRM declared to be too hardcore a drink for him. (Well, it's Scotch & Drambuie, so it's a sweet taste with a whiskey kick. Naturally, I love them). It was highly amusing to realize that bissonmomma's tolerance isn't quite what it was when we were younger-- or maybe mine's just gotten better. She's a fun & funny drunk & it was wonderful to see her out.

Ended up with some of us chronic night-owls heading up to Perkin's after the bar closed to hang out more & talk- namely, F & R & Kilbane & myself. After F & R had taken off, some drunk folks at Perkins decided things were just too quiet & got into a huge shouting match. It was amusing to watch the manager try to be intimidating- I think he's only about 3 inches taller than I am. Even more amusing was the commentary from the two older black guys at the next booth. While the one drunk was yelling at the manager, the one guy yelled out, "It's racial! No, wait, we're racial." (The drunk guy appeared to be what we used to call a "whigger", which is to say a white person who tried to have urban clothing & slang based on inner-city African-American styles. No matter how hard they try, fat white kids from the suburbs are not going pull off being Dr. Dre. And there ain't nowhere in the entire City of Erie that even comes close to matching South Central).

R's birthday is on Thursday, so I might try to make it out for that after my studio shift. Friday, Lissa wants to take me out to dinner for my b-day. I'm thinking of trying the Brewery for that one. I haven't been there in ages (since it was Porter's) & rumor has it that they've got a mead now- I'd *love* to check that out!

Also on deck for this weekend- a workshop at school with metalsmith Pat Flynn. I'm excited!
