And Now, A Meme...

... because I don't have anything better to do right now. Oh, wait- I do! But I'm being a slacker anyway.

1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favorite song, your favorite kind of sandwich, or maybe your favorite game. Any remark, meaningless or not.

2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.

3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.

4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.

5. When others respond with a comment, you will ask them five questions.

Here are my five questions, from alphviolet, who's probably been wondering if I was ever going to answer them...

1. What's your latest idea for a metalsmithing project?
I've got a bunch floating around in my head, actually. But the most recent one involves taking the odd snippets of things that I write that seem like they're trying to be song lyrics or poetry & calligraph them into some maze-books & have metal covers for them with removable hinge pins so the books can be opened all the way. The book block for a maze book is one single, fairly large sheet of paper that gets cut into various patterns & then folded up. Because of how it's cut, the pages open in different directions & some are hidden behind others so there's lots of different ways to explore the text or images.

2. What colors has your hair been?

Let's see... naturally, it's been blonde, red & dark brown (in that order. I was *very* blonde when I was really young, it started turning reddish-brown by the time I started first grade & dark brown by the time I was 8)
Unnaturally, it's been varying shades of red, purple, burgundy, black, black with red streaks, black with burgundy streaks, & green. The green was an accident- it was supposed to be blue, but crazy hair dyes weren't nearly so common in this area in the early 90's as they are now.

3. What is your ideal job?

I've got a couple: making props for fantasy or sci-fi films, teaching metalsmithing at the university level or being a straight up studio artist. I'm not sure I have enough discipline to just be a studio artist, though. I get scattered if I don't have some kind of structure in my life.

4. What's your favorite book that you've read this year?

Heh. Well, I'm rereading Good Omens, which is one of my favorite books of all time. I'm also rereading Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales, since I haven't read them in a long while. Not much new yet, since I haven't had the money to pick up any new books but GeekBro just lent me John Connolly's "The Book of Lost Things", which I'm very much looking forward to.

5. Are you still interested in writing up that idea for a novel that you mentioned on LJ a while ago?

I am! Only it's not really a novel- it's a combination writing/art project. I've got the kid's characters figured out & some of the adults and part of the plot. But only part of it is the writing of the stories & I'm not sure yet how much will be written & how much will be other things. A major component of the idea was that I'd be doing illustrations for the story but also that I'd be creating a lot of the objects that would figure into the stories, with the possibility that some of the objects & illustrations didn't necessarily have written stories to go with them. Before I get going on it too much, though, I want to do a bit more research into folklore, as it's going to be based in folk tales & what I call "fairy tale logic", which isn't quite the same as regular logic. (For example, Fairy Tale Logic decrees that life is fair & that the villains get what's coming to them & the heroes get their reward if they work hard & persevere.) I figure I can start doing the reading & such now (hence re-reading Grimm's) & then by the time I get back to school, I'll be ready to start actually working on the pieces themselves & it'll be my MFA thesis.
