Dear Friend,

I am enjoying my time in Provo. It rained for a few days a little while ago, and I had been optimistic that things were warming up. Sadly, that rain eventually turned into snow. I misplace my optimism sometimes, but I don't mind disappointment.
I gave my first live performance in the sphere of rock and roll music last night at an open-mic show. It was good for me to do it. I'm just very glad that I'm taking my songwriting class, because we had to write and perform a children's song in class today, and I decided that there would be no better way to prepare than to perform it beforehand. And I've needed an excuse to get on a stage for a while now. So I think that I killed two birds with one stone somewhere in there. I sang my children's song and a jazz arrangement of "If I Only Had a Brain" while playing my mandolin to both tunes. Using the name Joshua Quail, of course. I got some good compliments on the name, so I'll keep it. I met a couple of nice girls while I was waiting in line to get in, too. One of them was there to sing, the other was her friend's support. Then they were both my support! I'm glad, because I wasn't sure if I wanted to be there alone and get it over with, or have my friends there to cheer me on. Turns out I could have my cake and eat it, too! The best part? I played much better in my class the next day. Sometimes my evil plans DO work.
This weekend is shaping up pretty nicely. Tomorrow (Thursday) night I'm taking a girl I met at FHE on Monday to see Slumdog Millionaire, Friday I'm doing a blind double-date (no, not a double-blind date, you scientist, you) to the Utah Jazz game, then Saturday I'm doing a triple-date to a matinee of Thoroughly Modern Millie, after which I am auditioning into the BYU Music School for the Sound Recording Technology degree. After that? Collapse. Oh, and I have work on Thursday and Saturday from 5AM-9AM. This kid keeps himself busy. At least I get paid on Friday and I'll be able to afford all this frivolity.
I could tell you about my classes, too, but I don't really think either of us cares much to discuss that. Yes, let's leave it there.
I love you.

Definitely,

Josh Cannon
