A mixed bag

A lot of things lately. Some that I'm really excited for, some that I'm very sad about, and some that I'll have to wait and see. It was definitely nice having a three-day weekend (huzzah Memorial Day being a company holiday), and my 50-mile bike ride to the Hartland Farm Fest was both a great ride and a good time at the event.

But Monday was a lot of emotion. There's a lot of background to this involving lots of ugly legal property ownership issues within my family -but my parents and I were e-mailed on Friday that the family cabin at Lake Memphremagog that we had gone up to every year since before I was born, and before my dad was born even, is going to be demolished by one of my relatives within a few weeks. A few of you on my friends list here, I've taken up there for weekends, so you know the place. My parents and I hastily headed up there for the day on Monday to get some last photos and salvage a few last things from the cabin. It was nice - my dad brought a couple beers, and we toasted a final adieu to "To Bed We Go" (the name of the cabin). I got to save a few nice things, too - one of the old signs, a couple old games and puzzles, and a couple small pieces of furniture. It's a bit more difficult for me, though, because we assumed that the place would be staying put for much longer, and my first dog is buried in front of the cabin - he loved it up there.

Thanks to the legal mess of property ownership at Lake Memphremagog, I'm now left with no legal ownership or even right to the family properties, and Lake Memphremagog has been my favorite place in the world to go to. I'm the oldest in my generation, and I see the properties there crumbling apart, and I want to make sure that not only me, but the others in my generation have some place that they can go and share like has been for over 70 years now.

Anyways - beyond that - I'm trying to find both people to live with and places to live at at UMass Amherst for next year, which involves far too much e-mailing. But at least it looks like there are some interesting places and people around. We'll see how that turns out.

I also need to start more formally organizing my roadtrip around the U.S. for August - finding people to join me during the journey and finding places to stay and people to visit. I'll be e-mailing or calling y'all soon - though if you're in an interesting place or might be interested in joining, let me know and I'll see what we can do!

And it will be interesting to see what happens next term - summers are a lot of fun around here, but it's the people that you can spend time with at events and activities that are really what make them enjoyable.
