I said I'd do it and I'm keeping my word. Now that my computer is working I'm really going to make the effort to post more!
So, we went back to the venue this past weekend so we could get a better idea of what it looks like when it's nice out and not covered in snow. The location will be beautiful in August when all the crops are grown in. I'm super excited. We've got two options of where to hold the ceremony. They originally gave us three, but looking at the pond (which is not at all how I imagined it), it was dirty and not very pretty at all. We ruled that out pretty much immediately. We could get married in front of the barn doors, but I'm worried about the animal smell. It doesn't bother me at all, but it seemed to bother Mike and my mother, so I imagine I'm just so in love with the idea of getting married on a farm that I'm biased. Our other option is right behind the chalet. There's a little rise and we could stand on top of it while everyone else sat below for better viewing. Or, we could stand below in front of some trees with some people sitting on the rise and some people sitting on the same level as us. I like the idea of the trees, but I'm not sure about the sitting area. We're going back again in August to get a better idea of what it will be like around the time of the wedding.
I got my hair cut recently, and I talked to my hair stylist about wedding hair. He asked me about the dress and the venue and came up with a million wonderful ideas off the top of his head right away. It got me really excited! We're thinking something casual but vintage inspired, and depending how long my hair is by next August, loose curls of some sort. I still haven't figured out if I want a hairpiece or not or even a veil. I had my eye on a pair of
these, but in antique gold, but when I went back to check on them, they had sold! The black is okay, but I'm not entirely sold on it. If I do go with a veil, it will be a small birdcage veil. It's not a very formal wedding so I don't want to be all fancified while stomping around in the fields and eating barbeque.
So, the big news! I went to a bridal show back in May and put my name in for every draw I could find. I didn't think I'd won anything until I got a call last week saying my name had been picked along with several others to see a product demonstration and for going we would receive a prize. They only picked maybe 10 names, which made me feel kind of special. Anyway, we went, and it was for pots and pans that were amazing. I love cooking, and they were just so good that we decided we really wanted them. We couldn't really afford them however, so we signed up for the bridal registry. The prize we chose was a 5 day, 4 night cruise from Miami to the Bahamas! That's the honeymoon sorted, then! I had been worried that we wouldn't be able to afford to go, and Mike didn't seem sold on going on a trip. He'd rather put the money into the downpayment for a house. He's the practical one in this relationship, clearly. Anyway, for signing up for the bridal registry, they gave us a voucher for his and hers wedding bands up to $395 value! Which is AMAZING. I hadn't gotten around to picking out a band for Mike yet, and while my engagement ring came with a band, we could use this other one as an anniversary band, or sell it and use the money to fund further wedding plans, part of the flight down to Miami or go towards the downpayment.
It's just such a relief to have the biggest parts of the wedding sorted. We still have to worry about finding a wedding commissioner, I still need a dress, Mike still needs his suit. I need to track down Anthony and see if he can come back for the wedding to be my bridesman, or if he won't be able to make it. If he can't, I'll have to suck up my reservations and ask Glenda to be a bridesmaid. I'm sure she's expecting it, but I don't think that she's reliable enough. It's a gut feeling. We've got the guest list pretty narrowed down though. If everyone shows up and brings a guest it's still under 100 people which is lovely. We're testing barbeque sauces for our favours, and we're looking into purchasing mason jars to put them in.
On to decor, I'm really feeling fruit centrepieces instead of flowers. Flowers just don't last and they're so expensive! But I could do limes or fresh herbs for relatively cheap and they'll look lovely in vases. I'm also thinking fresh herbs for bouquets instead of flowers. A friend of mine just got married and had random flowers, leaves and twigs gathered around the park she was getting married in as her bouquet and it looked wonderful. I wonder if I could pull off something similar? I'm going out sometime soon to buy or collect old forks to use as placecard holders. I'll fold them similar to
this with them.
Danielle, my supervisor, is getting married in September so I'm using what she's been making/worrying about as a guide, as I've been to a total of 3 weddings. One was my aunt and uncle when I was 10, one was my friend's several years ago (who rented out a venue that did everything and she didn't worry about decorating) and one was a lesbian wedding that was in a church and then had cold cuts and dancing at a community centre afterwards. So, nothing really close to what I've had in mind for mine. I can't remember my aunt's and uncle's, Sherra's doesn't really stand out because I left early, and Erin and Sara's wedding was much more casual and religious than ours will be. I keep telling myself that I don't need to do things just because other weddings do them. This is my party, my commitment. We can do what we like and leave other traditions out if they don't suit us. I'm also telling myself to prepare for not having absolutely everything go according to my plans. I need to go with the flow and even if it's not absolutely perfect, I will still love it and have a great time and remember it fondly later.
Is there anyone on my friend's list that is married or getting married or thinking of marriage who has any suggestions for me?
I'll post again when I've got some pictures. I'm hoping to buy my dress before the summer is over!
