In the current political climate, this seems LJ-worthy -- it was forwarded to me by our volunteer coordinator at the Sexual Assault Resource Agency in Charlottesville, and is just a set of phone numbers and talking points encouraging Virginia's legislators to cosponsor the Violence Against Women Act, which is up for renewal, in serious jeopardy, and the largest source of funding for sexual assault programs across the country. Please at least take a look at the info
Hi Everyone. I am attaching some information about
the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). This is one of
the main sources of SARA's funding. I am asking each
of you to call the offices of Senator Allen and
Senator Warner as well as Representative Goode. Let
them know where you live and that you would like them
to co-sponsor VAWA! It is very important that they
hear from constituents. The information attached and
below should be everything you need. It should only
take a minute. If you have questions, feel free to
give me a call. Thank you!

VAWA Talking Points
All it takes is a simple phone call to their office:
"Hi, this is (your name, agency name, and locality).
I'm calling to ask (Sen/Congressperson Last Name) to
cosponsor (S1197 for Senators, HR2876 for
Representatives) the reauthorization of the Violence
Against Women Act.
At this point, they may or may not transfer you to
someone else. Either way, your message is:
The Violence Against Women Act provides Virginia's
sexual assault crisis centers, domestic violence
programs and other agencies that serve victims of
sexual violence with vital funding to provide much
needed services to victims. This year, the VAWA
reauthorization bill includes additional funding for
direct services through the Sexual Assault Services
Act. This funding is desperately needed in the area
we serve (list cities/counties in your service area).
(you can provide additional information about the
victims you see, programs and services you provide,
and what you aren't able to do because of lack of
funding - optional but really good if you can do it).
We hope the Senator/Congressperson will demonstrate
his/her support of victims of sexual and domestic
violence by co-sponsoring (HR2876/S1197) the
reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act."
That's it. The Action Alliance, along with national
groups lobbying for VAWA, will provide technical
information. All you need to do is let your
congresspeople know that this is an important issue in
your area and that you, as a constituent, are asking
for their support. If someone does ask how they go
about co-sponsoring or they want more information, you
can inform them that they can contact either Senator
Biden’s office at (202) 224-5042 or Senator Specter’s
office at (202) 224-4254, or in the House they can
contact Representative Mark Green’s office at (202)
225-5665 or Representative Conyers’ office at (202)
225-5126.
Senate and House phone numbers are listed below:
Senate
Senator Allen (202) 224-4024
Senator Warner (202) 224-2023
House
Congressman Bob Goodlatte (202) 225-5431
Congressman Randy Forbes (202) 225-6365
Congressman Bobby Scott (202) 225-8351

and think about taking a few minutes to make a phone call -- you're taking a step to ensure the security of funding that aids one in four women you know.
