YES. Yes we can. And yes we did.

Today truly is the dawning of a new era.
I am so unbelievably proud to be a part of the USA.

Voting made me happy.  Like I did something right.

At around 11-11:30, I started hearing shouting outside Sean's window: "YEAH! OBAMA WON! OBAMA! WHOO!"
Sure enough, 297 electoral votes.

The shouting spread like a glorious contagion across the entirety of our tiny campus.  Shouting, cheering, screaming, whooping, all became one.
When the noise didn't let up after 5 minutes, we decided to go outside and join it.

A mob had collected on the other side of the townhouses.  Everyone cheering and hugging each other.  White, black, whathaveyou.  Excitement permeating the air.

Then someone announced that McCain had conceded.  And the happy shouting reached new heights.
Someone set off a firework and it was awesome.

Police cars had been congregating the entire time, and then, suddenly they multiplied.  And three kids (who I'm guessing set off the firework) were taken aside for questioning.  Caught up in the moment, the energy, we cheered for them. And it was awesome.

It was fucking beautiful.  College kids getting worked up... for a POLITICIAN.  Kids who, stereotypically, are supposed to just not give a damn about their country, or the world, or anything.
Today we cared, for today, we voted. Or, if unable, we supported.  And tonight we celebrated the victory we fought for.  Tonight we made a difference.
Tonight made me proud to be a young adult.

Tonight made me believe that, when our parents are dead and gone, and we are left to run this country... maybe, just maybe...
We'll do this thing right.

With all her <3, Jessie
