There are some songs that have special memories attached to them. Maybe you listened to them when you were going through something important or memorable in your life, and so even now when you listen to them, those memories come racing back. Here are my top ten.
Wake me up before you go go (George Michael) - This one was a craze in the mid to late 80s. I remember singing this song with my friends in the school bus and discussing George Michael as if he was God's best gift to women (or men?!). Of course we were just little kids but we still sang this song and raved about George Michael coz we'd hear the older kids do that! Even when I listen to it now it reminds me of those school bus days...
Kabhi Alvida na Kehna (the old one with Simi Garewal) - This is one song that has been sung to death in Army cantts. Reason? Whenever anyone would get posted out, there would be the 'dining out' party and this song would be sung...chalte chalte mere ye geet yaad rakhna kabhi alvida na kehna... So even when I hear it now, instead of the actual video, what flashes in my mind are dining out parties and people singing!
Nothing's gonna change my love for you (Glenn Madeiros) - I think it was 1990 or 91. This song was such a big hit that it was played at my school fete at least a 100 times. All we had to do was go to the request stall and pay some amount and dedicate the song to someone. The Bishops school boys kept dedicating this song over and over and over to the girls of my school.
Koi mil gaya (KKHH) - This one equals fun and fighting and 10 girls trying to figure out how to dance. It also equals colorful tees and blue jeans and heart-shaped balloons. No, not SRK, Rani and Kajol...but me and my friends (the g10 goondi gang) putting up a dance program for some college event. It was so much fun!
Be my lover (La Bouche) - This song reminds me of the geri route in Chandigarh. People with cars would play this song loudly on the Chandigarh roads...and I can picture me and my friends on our Kinetic Hondas thinking that we are the coolest Chandigarh chicks...going off to Hot Millions and JamPack :P
Waiting for tonight (Jennifer Lopez) - This one I remember as the 'millenium' song. Everyone was so excited about the year 2000, and when it happened, this song was everywhere. That year I was in 1st yr of MBA and every dance party we had would definitely have this song on the playlist. So when I hear it...I think Y2k.
Shehar ki ladki (Rakshak) - Ooooh! This one is meeee! Masti mein ghoome ghoome ghoome ghoome aa ha haa - the song that my juniors sang for me as a "title" when I was graduating from NIMC. I still rock to this one! ;)
Tanha Dil (Shaan) - This song reminds me of NIMC at the time when we were about to finish the course. The song is about moving on and leaving your friends behind, and that was pretty much the state of our minds at that time. When I listen to it...I think of my friends...those young days in the hostel...life was just starting...so much to look forward to...so much to leave behind...
Toxic (Britney Spears) - This song reminds me of stepping into the US for the first time in 2005. I think it was playing in the car from the airport to the hotel when I had my first look at Amreeka and the awesome big roads and freeways and fast cars. Those visions and the first time awe comes right back whenever I hear it.
Aahista Aahista (Bachna Ae Haseeno) - This one is recent and yet has such sweet memories attached to it! When I hear it I think of all the road trips in the US this time. Some with R and MIC...some with R alone...but if there's something that was constant, it was this song. When I hear it I can literally see those roads again...to Chicago, Cincinnati, Mason, Tahoe, Vegas...and relive all those sidey discussions we'd have and the silly things we'd do...
